Corsicana — Dawson at Wortham

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Dawson: OL/LB Jake Strother, WR/DB Marvin Manning, OL/DE Mark Martinez, RB/DB Alex Ruiz. Wortham: RB Tyvon Freeman, RB/P Shane Sykora, NT Cameron Lewis, RB/DB Kyle Goener.

UPDATE: Dawson travels to Wortham to finish the regular season in a showdown between two struggling Bulldog teams … Dawson lost its Battle of Highway 31 contest against Hubbard, 70-0, a week ago while Wortham had a bye … it’s been an uphill battle for both squads this year, as they have posted the two lowest totals in the Golden Circle in both total offense and points scored … Wortham holds the edge in each of those categories, however … Dawson has scored 68 fewer points in 2012 than this week’s foe … Friday night’s matchup holds playoff implications, with the final postseason position still up for grabs in 9-1A DII, and Wortham looking like the favorite to claim it … in 2011 Wortham downed Dawson, 49-6, behind an 82-yard rushing performance by RB Freeman … it was the lone win of the season for the Bulldogs in blue and white … Wortham racked up 265 yards on the ground, and scored 35 points in the first half to claim that victory … Dawson was held to just 78 yards of offense in the loss … RB Dalton Long scored the lone touchdown for the black and gold Bulldogs in that meeting.

  • BG baseball GC Baseball/Softball: Blooming Grove sweeps Rice in baseball and softball

Blooming Grove's Lions needed this one.
Heck, they need all of them.
That's where they're living today on the Blooming Grove diamond, where everyone knew going into Friday's game with Rice that the Lions need to win their final three games to have a chance of nailing down the final playoff spot in District 23-2A.
    One down, two to go.
“It's in our hands,'' said Blooming Grove Coach Matt Anderson moments after his kids beat Rice 8-0 Friday night. “As long as we take care of our business we'll be fine.''

  • GC Basketball/Baseball: Mildred's Connor Hill sees life clearly

There was never any doubt for Connor Hill, never any question about what he would do or how he would do it.
Sure, there was that meeting with his mother and father and talks with the doctor when he was 10, talks and meetings that came accompanied with worry and concern.
    But never from Connor.
He just never dwelled on the fact he played sports with one eye. He didn't worry or talk about it when he was 10 and he never talked about it at Mildred High, where Hill emerged as a star on the basketball court and baseball diamond.

Am I just that old, or have amateur athletics gone absolutely nuts these days? On second thought, don’t answer that unless it’s yes to the nuts part.
High School and college basketball are on the verge of being totally ruined by AAU basketball. Top roundball prospects are identified by the junior high level if not earlier.
