Golden Circle Football: Week 10 Preview

Corsicana — Dawson at Wortham

7:30 p.m. Friday

At Bulldog Stadium

RECORDS: Class 1A Dawson is 0-9, 0-3 in District 9-1A DII. Wortham is 3-6, 1-2.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Dawson: OL/LB Jake Strother, WR/DB Marvin Manning, OL/DE Mark Martinez, RB/DB Alex Ruiz. Wortham: RB Tyvon Freeman, RB/P Shane Sykora, NT Cameron Lewis, RB/DB Kyle Goener.

UPDATE: Dawson travels to Wortham to finish the regular season in a showdown between two struggling Bulldog teams … Dawson lost its Battle of Highway 31 contest against Hubbard, 70-0, a week ago while Wortham had a bye … it’s been an uphill battle for both squads this year, as they have posted the two lowest totals in the Golden Circle in both total offense and points scored … Wortham holds the edge in each of those categories, however … Dawson has scored 68 fewer points in 2012 than this week’s foe … Friday night’s matchup holds playoff implications, with the final postseason position still up for grabs in 9-1A DII, and Wortham looking like the favorite to claim it … in 2011 Wortham downed Dawson, 49-6, behind an 82-yard rushing performance by RB Freeman … it was the lone win of the season for the Bulldogs in blue and white … Wortham racked up 265 yards on the ground, and scored 35 points in the first half to claim that victory … Dawson was held to just 78 yards of offense in the loss … RB Dalton Long scored the lone touchdown for the black and gold Bulldogs in that meeting.

7:30 p.m. Friday

At Asby Field

RECORDS: Class 2A Scurry-Rosser is 5-4, 4-2 in District 6-2A DII. Mildred is 8-1, 6-0.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Scurry-Rosser: QB Mason Alexander, WR/DB Jalen Blanton, L Brandon Morris, WR/LB Thomas Tilford. Mildred: C Jasper Marshall, RB/LB Nathan Childress, WR/DB Graham Coker, L Keanu Fathal.

UPDATE:  Mildred scored at least 70 points for the third time in four games in a 72-0 win over Oak Cliff Life last week … Scurry-Rosser also scored 70 last week, beating Millsap, 75-7 … the Wildcats won three games last year, one in district, but would clinch a playoff spot with an upset win over Mildred (or a Blooming Grove loss to winless Millsap) … Scurry-Rosser boasts a solid passing game with Alexander, Blanton and Tilford … Alexander threw for 289 yards and two TDs against Blooming Grove three weeks ago, with Blanton and Tilford both topping 100 yards receiving … the Wildcats average 31.2 points per game, and allow 27.6 … Childress is third on the team with two fumble recoveries for Mildred … Eagles RB/DB and primary returner Draylon Sterling is three TDs away from 30 for the season … the Eagles have run for 253 yards or more in all but one game (107 in a 70-22 loss to Centerville) and have only passed for more yards in a game twice (Centerville, and 336-329 in a 62-0 win over Blooming Grove).

  • Back in Action.jpg GC Football: Two-a-days: Back to Action

    It's here.
When the sun comes up Monday morning it's not just the dawn of a new day, but the dawn of a new season — it's the beginning of two-a-days.
Eight of the nine schools in the Golden Circle will begin football practice Monday while Corsicana waits until Aug. 8 to start. The Tigers begin a week later because they held spring practice.
For last year's playoff teams such as Mildred, Blooming Grove, Kerens, Frost and Hubbard Monday begins a road back to the postseason and for everyone else its the start of a new march. For everyone, it's the most optimistic day of the year.

  • RON MORGAN.jpg Morgan: ESPN was wrong in suspending Smith

I won’t be watching ESPN this coming week. For a network that has been made into an empire by covering baseballs, footballs, basketballs, golf balls, soccer balls, tennis balls (I’ve never watched hockey, but I understand they have no balls), this network is much like hockey. They lack the things they are covering.

    Breanna Baxter is back.
That's bad news for anyone facing the Kerens volleyball team this year.
But there is so much more than Baxter, an all-state player in volleyball, basketball and track & field who was the Golden Circle Female Athlete of the Year in 2014.

  • I7-31-14 Mayper.jpg Navarro Football: Nothing changes for success-minded Bulldogs

It didn't take long for Navarro football Coach Brian Mayper  to deliver his preseason message at the SWJCFC Media Day Thursday.
“No surprises at Navarro,'' said Mayper, the first of the seven conference coaches to speak to the media. “We're running the same stuff. You guys know we're going to run the ball. And thank God, we're not changes defenses again this year.''
Mayper's real message is that life at Navarro is all about winning, and all about a culture that expects to win.
“We expect to win them all. If you don't, you're in the wrong business,'' Mayper said. “I think our kids expect it, too.''

    Everybody's back at Frost.
    Yes, everybody.
“This will probably never happen again,'' said Frost volleyball Coach Elaine Woods, who returns every player from last year's team.
They are not only back, but they are talented — arguably the most talented group of volleyball players in Frost history.
