GC Softball: Lady Lions win two to grab second place

Falcon Thompson allowed only one unearned run over 14 innings Saturday as Blooming Grove defeated both Riesel and Teague to advance to the Class 2A state softball playoffs.

The three teams finished the regular season in a three-way tie for second place in District 23-2A. A triple-header Saturday determined which two teams would advance to the post-season. The Lady Lions swept the first two games to secure the second-place finish in conference. Riesel topped Teague 5-3 in the late game to claim the league’s third post-season berth.

Thompson pitched a three-hit shutout in the first game as Blooming Grove blanked Riesel, 2-0. Over seven innings, the junior southpaw struck out nine and walked two.

Senior center fielder Lindsay Shuart led the Lady Lions’ offense with a 2-for-3 performance. She scored one run and drove in another.

Shuart led off the bottom of the third with a single. She then stole second, moved to third on Sidney Horner’s single and crossed home plate on an error. Shuart later singled in the fourth to score Haven Cofer.

Cofer, Thompson and Hanna Chaffin also had hits in the contest.

In the second game, Blooming Grove edged Teague 2-1. Thompson gave up only two hits over seven innings, while fanning 11 hitters and walking only three.

Teague scored first in the top of the third to take a one-run lead, but Blooming Grove tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. Thompson led off with a single to right field. She moved to second on Lauren Miller’s single up the middle and then scored on a throwing error.

The Lady Lions took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Horner singled, stole second, moved to third on Steely Southard’s sacrifice bunt, and then scored as Thompson reached on an error.

Miller led Blooming Grove’s offensive attack, going 2 for 3 at the plate. Horner and Thompson each singled and scored a run. Shelby Beamon and Alexis Goodwin also had hits in the game.
