Dawson — DAWSON —  It was raining Friday night at Ed Mitchell Field, and when it rained it poured for the Dawson Bulldogs. The Axtell Longhorns stormed onto the field and not only shredded the turf but the Bulldog defense also, in a 39-0 win.

Dawson is still looking for their first victory on the campaign and under new head coach Larry Prince. Adding to Dawson’s pain is the fact that the Bulldogs have scored only twice in the last two years with both coming against Cross Roads. Axtell moves to 3-1 on the season.

On his first rush and his team’s first series, Michael Milburn stormed into the end zone but the play was called back due to a holding call. That certainly mustn’t have flustered him because the next time he got the ball he started off the Longhorns scoring with a 31 yard rush strait up the heart of the defense. He ended up leading the Longhorns in rushing with 123 yards, but he wasn’t a 1 trick pony as he led Axtell in the receiving category also with 45 yards.

The Bulldogs introduced an offense with the QB under center which appeared to confuse the defense on their opening drives. Dawson came out with a rapid start and gained two quick first downs but lost all of their momentum on a bad pitch by QB Lane Dotson intended for RB Dalton Long. Dawson rebounded from its opening miscue and were driving deep in Longhorn territory on their fourth drive when Lane Dotson was picked off by LB Garrett Wilson. Wilson had a good return and set up the offense nicely. Axtell scored on the drive with a 45 yard completion by QB Kolten Hurst to Michael Milburn in the winding moments of the first half.

Dawson’s offense mainly consisted of RB/WR Ian Norwood ‘s 48 yards rushing, RB Dalton Long’s 37 and QB Lane Dotson’s 44 yards on the ground. The Bulldog’s first half was littered with mistakes that ultimately cost them a chance a score. Five crucial penalties were a big part in the loss. But none were bigger than one made with 41 seconds left in the first half. Ian Norwood had returned an Axtell kickoff 74 yards for a touchdown but it was called back by a block in the back call.

The second half was uneventful as there only one scoring play, a 8 yard pass from Tyler Gordon to Jamie Brannen, which expanded the lead to 39-0.

The Bulldogs second half consisted of a two 3 and outs, a fumble and a turnover on downs.
