Whitehouse pitcher Ryan Cheatham got stronger as the game got longer, taking the bite out of the seventh-ranked Corsicana Tigers 3-1 in a District 16-4A baseball on Thursday night at Wildcat Field.
Cheatham, a lanky right-hander, struck out eight including three straight in the final inning after a leadoff single by Zane Otten, his third hit of the game. The Wildcat pitcher allowed just five hits.
Cheatham got out of a bases-loaded and no-out situation by allowing just one run and with the help from his defense.
A fielder’s choice by Zach Rash turned into a third, to home, back to third double play to end a possible big inning.
Corsicana pitcher Holden Grounds, who has allowed only one earned run all season, gave up just one hit and that was by Cheatham.
The Wildcats took advantage of three errors by the Tiger shortstop.
Patrick Mahomes reached on an error leading off the fourth and Michael Nuon followed with a walk. Derek Clemons drove in a run with a grounder and Cheatham added a sacrifice fly as the Wildcats led 2-1.
In the fifth, Jared Raabe walked, stole second and went to third on a passed ball. He then raced home on a wild pitch for a 3-1 lead.
Whitehouse (15-6) stays atop the district at 4-0 with an open date on Tuesday, and a district matchup at Mike Carter Field against John Tyler on April 5. Corsicana falls to 3-1.
