Jacksonville — The Tigers had to wait a week to get back on the field since the loss to Whitehouse.

They wasted no time in getting back in the win column, traveling to Jacksonville for a 10-3 win in a game originally scheduled for Price Field before this week’s rains.

The Tigers (19-5-1) finished the first half of District 16-4A play with a 4-1 record. Jacksonville fell to 1-4 in district. The Tigers will be in action Tuesday in Tyler as they start the second half against the John Tyler Lions.

The Tigers took an early lead with Layton Wolver taking a lead-off walk and advancing to second base on an errant pickoff attempt. Brady Harlan then advanced him to third with a ground ball to the right side. Holden Grounds followed with an RBI line drive up the middle as the Tigers took a text book lead in the first inning.

It would be the first of three hits and three RBIs as Grounds had a big game at the plate.

The Tigers managed another run in the second and the third but they could not put together the big inning. Finally in the fourth they were able to break through with four runs. The inning was started with back-to-back one-out walks by Aaron Cantu and Wolver. Harlan had an RBI single and Grounds followed with his second double of the night for two RBIs. Hunter Denbow finished up the scoring with an RBI single.

The Tigers scored three more in the top of the sixth. Harlan led off the inning with a single followed by a walk to Grounds. Denbow had another RBI single. He managed to take home from third on a dropped third strike when the catcher threw to first to complete the strikeout. The Tigers finished their scoring when Zane Otten, who had reached on a fielder’s choice, stole home with two outs.

Grounds started the game on the mound and continued his dominance of 16-4A hitters with five strong innings. Through four innings he allowed no hits or walks. One runner reached on a fielding error but was erased by a pickoff from catcher Zach Rash. The no hit bid was broken up in the fifth with an infield hit in which Denbow almost made a spectacular play at shortstop on a barehanded grab that made it close.

Grounds then struck out the next hitter, but the third strike was dropped and Rash attempted to tag the hitter. The umpire ruled that the tag was missed and that led to runners at first and second with two outs. Jeremy McAnally then singled to left to plate the first run of the game for the Indians.

Grounds got out of the inning with a strikeout. He left the game after the fifth with eight strikeouts, a walk and allowed two hits and one unearned run. Jeremy Fowler came on to pitch the final two innings allowing two runs in the seventh.

The pitching was backed up by strong defense from freshman Wolver, who showed excellent range.

The Tigers (19-5-1) finished the first half of District 16-4A play with a 4-1 record. Jacksonville fell to 1-4 in district. The Tigers will be in action Tuesday in Tyler as they start the second half against the John Tyler Lions.
