CHS Baseball: Tigers reach 20 wins

Corsicana wins 13-1 over John Tyler Lions

Corsicana — Heath Autrey's Corsicana Tiger baseball team reached the 20 win plateau for the second consecutive season with a 13-1 win over the John Tyler Lions. The win has the Tigers with a 5-1 district record as they began the second half of District play at historic Mike Carter Field in Tyler.

The Tigers started the scoring in the top of the 1st when Brady Harlan had a 1 out single and stole second. Holden Grounds then walked. Harlan moved to 3rd on a fielders choice by Hunter Denbow. Harlan then scored on a wild pitch. Jeremy Wilson got Zane Otten to strikeout to end the threat.

The Lions answered in the bottom of the inning when starting pitcher DJ Minniear walked lead off Nate Jacobs and allowed two infield hits to load the bases. Jacobs scored as the tigers threw to second base for a pickoff and Jacobs broke for home. The throw was wild and Jacobs was able to score. Minniear was able to get out of trouble and the game was tied after one.

The Tigers wasted another scoring opportunity in the second when Trevor Nolen reached on a walk and Ben Goodrich reached on an error giving the Tigers runners at 2nd and 3rd with no outs. Wilson managed to get off the hook with two popups and a strikeout. The Tigers found themselves tied after two innings at one. The offense finally broke loose in the 3rd. Harlan led off with a bunt single and was moves to 2nd by Grounds. Denbow reached on a n error and stole second. An attempted bunt for a hit by Otten was unsuccessful. That left it to freshman Trevor Nolen to come through with two outs.  He hammered a two strike pitch into left field to pick up 2 RBI. Ben Goodrich and Zach Rash each drew walks bringing up left fielder Aaron Cantu. He came up with a two run single. Layton Wolver followed with a walk and Harlan followed with his second hit of the inning for an RBI that loaded the bases. Grounds came up with a bases clearing double to finish the scoring in the third with a total of 8 runs.

Trevor Nolen had a huge night at the plate going 3 for 3 with a walk and 5 RBI. Harlan who came into thw game hitting .533 in district had 3 more hits while Grounds continued to pound the ball with two hits.

Minniear pitched two innings and allowed 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4. Tyler Casbeer came on to pitch 3 strong innings in relief getting out with only 28 pitches.

The Tigers will be back in action Friday night at Price Field against Nacogdoches.

Softball

Tuesday’s Games

Blooming Grove 14, Buffalo 3: Hannah Chaffin turned in a perfect three-for-three plate performance, including a pair of doubles, Tuesday to lead Blooming Grove to a 14-3 win over Buffalo on the road.

Chaffin scored four runs, drove in another and stole three bases. Sidney Horner was four for five with two runs scored, one RBI and a stolen base.

Lexi Goodwin was two for three, scoring three runs, driving in two and stealing a bag. Steely Southard was two for four with a run scored, RBI and a stolen base.

Falcon Thompson earned the mound win. In five innings of work, she allowed no earned runs on two hits with six strikeouts. She helped her own cause with a three-run double.

Haven Cofer singled, scored two runs, drive in two more and stole a base. Rachel East singled and crossed twice. Shelby Beamon also had a base hit and Lauren Miller scored a run for the Lady Lions.

BG resumes action Friday when the Lady Lions host Rice.

Mildred 3, Teague 2 9 innings:

The Mildred Lady Eagles traveled to Teague and found themselves in a battle to remain undefeated in district play.

The Lady Eagles clawed their way to a 3-2 nine inning victory and their fourth consecutive district championship with the win.

Senior Olivia Farmer went the distance on the mound for the Eagles. Teague managed an infield single in the bottom of the third inning for their only hit of the game. Farmer struck-out 11 and walked five in her 9 innings of work.

Down 2-0 in the top of the fourth, Shelby Adamson singled to lead off the inning. Brianna Weaver then drove an RBI single to rightfield for the Lady Eagles first run of the game.

In the top off the fifth inning, Callie Bland walked and stole second and third. Farmer then helped her cause with an RBI sacrifice fly to tie the score at 2-2.

The score remained 2-2 until the top of the ninth inning, when Savannah Pritchett hit a double to left-centerfield. With two outs, Morgan McCreary hit  a game winning RBI single to score Pritchett.

Farmer pitched a perfect ninth inning to clinch the district championship.

Monday’s Games

Frost 10, Waco Vanguard 0 (6): Jae Moore tossed a no-hitter and was part of a monster offensive onslaught by Frost. Moore (8-3) had nine strikouts, and was one of five players with at least two hits as the Lady Bears improved to 8-3.

Hillaree Schwartz led the Lady Bears with a home run and a double among her three hits, and she had two RBIs. Madison Revill had a pair of hits, including a double, and scored twice. Dakota Lassetter was 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, while Cheyenne Pack was 2 for 4 with a double and two runs. Moore added two RBIs for the Lady Bears, who plated two runs in each of the first, second, third, fifth and sixth innings.
