NC Baseball: Navarro takes two from Bossier Parrish

Navarro took a pair of thrilling games from Bossier Parrish Thursday evening, playing games originally scheduled for home on Wednesday at Mesquite’s Poteet High School after rains. The Bulldogs got a one-hitter and a ninth-inning rally to crack the 30-win plateau, and keep the pace in conference play.

They swept Bossier Parrish, 6-1, and 5-4, to move to 30-11, and 19-3 atop the Region XIV East Zone standings.

In the opener, Gage Curry gave up a first-inning run, then was just filthy the rest of the way. He allowed a double in that opening frame, but that was the only hit he allowed in the complete-game outing. He struck out nine.

But he almost came away empty-handed.

The Bulldogs didn’t score until the sixth, when they pushed all six runs across. The big blow was a three-run home run from Byron Reichstein.

In the nightcap, the Bulldogs again found themselves in a hole as Bossier Parrish pushed four runs across in the first. And again, the Bulldogs trailed most of the game. They scored a run in second, two more in the fifth, but did not win the game until plating two in the bottom of the ninth.

Blake Griffin earned the win in relief. Four Bulldogs pitched, with JD Hammer logging the longest outing with 4 1/3 innings of two-hit ball.

Kevin Meredith led the offense, going 2 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs. Kaleb Goodell was 3 for 5 with an RBI, and Tyler Wilson added a pair of hits.

Call it the rarest of rares, at least as far as all-state teams go. Brett Anderson of Kerens shows up on the Texas Sports Writers Association/Collin Street Bakery all-state team not one, not two, not three, but four times. Dawson's Lane Dotson was a second-team outfielder, and the Bulldogs' Trent Underwood made the third-team as a pitcher, and also garnered an honorable mention nod at first base. Kerens outfielder Brent Warren was also an honorable mention pick.

If there is anything more useless than a political promise, it’s an all-star game. I don’t care what sport at what level. Any all-star game is simply an exhibition, a reward for being among the best (maybe). Any one of them is about as relevant as the IRS’s “dog ate my homework” excuse for losing emails.
