JUCO World Series: The goods ... Navarro knows what it takes (UPDATED: Corrects schedules to CST)

Coach Whoa Dill thinks this team could be better than 2011 national champion

(Continued)

Corsicana — Defining moment

No moment in time can top Files’ two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th to be favorite Central Arizona in the 2011 championship game.

Files went the other way, after faking a bunt, and hit a shot over the right field fence, setting off a wild celebration.

What will be this year’s defining moment? It could come early in the tournament. It could come late.

Chances are something magical will happen if the Bulldogs are able to pull off another national title.

Fans in Grand Junction remember how Navarro won its first title.

“It’s going to be hard to repeat,” Dill said. “That was storybook. These fans in Grand Junction remember it. They’re glad to see us back here.

“If it’s another walkoff or we somehow win by eight runs, we’ll take it,” Dill said. “If we play well we’re going to give ourselves a chance.”

  • GC Baseball/Softball: Mildred names Zamzow new baseball coach; AD Chambliess to coach softball again

The Mildred Eagles didn’t have to go far to find a new baseball coach to replace Aaron Tidwell, who left the diamond to take the job as the principal of Mildred High School.
On Saturday, Mildred named softball coach Brett Zamzow its new baseball coach as Zamzow, who was Tidwell's assistant for five years,  moves back to baseball after spending a year coaching softball.
To complete the move Mildred Athletic Director Billy Dan Chambliess will take over the softball team. Chambliess, who is the head football coach, spent fours years coaching softball before becoming the school’s AD last year. All four of his teams won district titles.

The Cowboys started training camp the same week that Robert Newhouse died.
In a way, that’s very unfortunate for Jerry. Thinking back to the “Human Bowling Ball” and the teams of that era might lead to the inevitable comparisons to today’s product on the field.
