Rice goes 2-1 at Eustace
Rice placed second in pool play at the Eustace Tournament on Thursday.
Rice defeated Mabank’s JV team, 25-21, 25-2, lost to Eustace’s varsity, 10-25,10-25, and then came back to beat North Dallas’ varsity, 25-13, 25-15
Hanna Owens was 17-of-19 serving with five aces and 19 assists. She also had two kills and a save. Samantha Harris had three kills and a block, and Sadie Gent was 19-of-19 serving with an ace. She also had 12 kills and 10 digs.
Rice is back in Eustace on Saturday.
Wortham goes 1-2 at Groesbeck
Wortham ran into trouble in its opening match in the Groesbeck Tournament on Thursday, losing to Mart in three close games, 23-25, 25-22, 25-23, in pool play.
Elisha Libhart led Wortham with with 10 kills and 18 digs, Sara Sessions had 12 digs, and Kierra Busby had seven kills. Kendle Rhodes had 20 assists and Ashley Anderson led at the service line with 11 serves and two aces.
Waco LaVega beat Wortham 25-15, 25-19. Busby (6 kills), Sessions (10 digs) Rhodes (12 assists), and Hannah McCord (4 kills) all had strong games.
Wortham came back to beat Waco High 25-22, 12-25, 25-23. Libhart (11 kills, 12 digs), Busby (7 kills). Anderson (9 digs) and Rhodes (15 assists) led on the court, and the serves leader was Sessions (13).
“We made too many hitting errors in the game against Mart, mainly due to a good job by their middle blockers,’’ coach Johnny Ward said. “We played very well against LaVega but their height and quickness proved to be a bit too much for us. We played even better against Waco High and were proud to come out with the win.’’
Wortham is back in Groesbeck on Saturday.
