ENNIS — Corsicana's team tennis squad won the first Area Tournament title Saturday and advances to the Regional Tournament.
The Tigers defeated District 15-4A champ Ennis 10-2 in the championship match of the first ever Area Tournament on Satuday. The UIL changed the playoff format this season, and the players on the Corsicana team wanted to make history as the first team to win the Area Tournament title.
Corsicana won the title easily, beating Waxahachie, 18-1, and knocking off Whitehouse 10-1 in the first two rounds on Friday to advance to the title match. The Tigers are now 20-4 for the season and have won 13 of their last 14 matches.
“The weekend was amazing! Our team played so well under pressure and when it counted, I couldn't be prouder,’’ coach Chad White said. “Ennis was a good team. We just played really well to get a huge lead. We swept all 7 doubles matches to be up 7-0. Had to win three singles matches. Maggie Phiney (No. 1 girls singles) was the 10th win the seal the victory.’’
Corsicana plays in the Region Tournament, beginning Friday.
“We now move onto the regional tournament where there will be only 8 teams,’’ White said. “Highland park will be the No. 1 seed and more than likely Texas High will be the 2 seed. After that, Lovejoy and Frisco Centennial may get the No. 3, and No. 4 seeds. We would probably be the 5 seed if they seed that many.’’
