ROUND ROCK —
It’s official, Hunter Hawkins is the best cross country runner in Blooming Grove High history.
Hawkins, a senior, finished 15th in the Class 2A state cross country meet on Saturday, running the 3.16-mile course in 16:48 to not only write his name in Blooming Grove’s record book as the highest finisher in the school’s history, but also the runner with the best time at the state meet.
Michael Lippencourt was a cross country legend at Blooming Grove, where he finished 27th at the state meet in 2006, but Hawkins ran by Lippencourt Saturday at a tough hill-laden course in Round Rock to become the best Lion at a state meet.
Zeb Thomas owned the fastest time in a state championship meet for the Lions, but his 2010 time of 17:24 was eclipsed by Hawkins, who owns the two most coveted cross country records at Blooming Grove.
Hawkins has qualified for next week’s Junior Olympic Area cross country meet, where he won the 15-16 year-old division area championship last year. Hawkins hopes to qualify for the Junior Olympics National Championship, which will be held in San Antonio on Dec. 14.
