It’s about to turn cold on campus, but it’s all sunny skies for the Navarro women’s soccer team. The Bulldogs are Florida bound.
Third-ranked Navarro doubled up host Cisco, 2-1, Sunday to win the District I championship. As a results, the Bulldogs (16-3-1) are headed to the NJCAA national tournament for the first time since 2008.
Navarro got unassisted goals from Trudi Carter (28:12) and Judith Bast (75:55) to erase a 1-0 deficit. Carter’s goal came less than three minutes after Cisco had gone ahead on a goal from Maya Ballez (26:00).
“Both teams played very well,” said Aric Bonner, assistant to his wife, head coach Debbie Bonner. “Cisco is to be commended for playing a great game, with a lot of effort.
“The winning shot by Judith was an absolute rocket struck from the right flank, roughly 25 yards out,” Bonner added.
Under Debbie and Aric, the Bulldogs are 134-34-12 since 2004, according to Navarro College’s sports Twitter account, @NavarroSports.
Navarro had 10 shots on goal Sunday, and 26 in two district games. Cisco had four shots on goal, and in two games, Navarro only allowed five.
The Bulldogs will join 11 other teams at the national tournament, scheduled for Nov. 18-23 in Melbourne, Fla. It’s the sixth district title in 11 seasons for the Bulldogs.
