Red Oak continues dominance of Tigers

Corsicana —  It’s a trend.

It’s not a pretty trend, and it’s not a fashionable trend. But a trend all the same.

A trend the Corsicana Tigers want to see end.

For the third time in the past 12 months Red Oak beat the Tigers. This one came at the end of what had been a wild start, but it ended with the Hawks celebrating a 49-21 victory at Tiger Stadium, where Corsicana trailed 28-21 at halftime then watched Red Oak score 21 second half points, including a needless 1-yard TD run with 52 seconds left in the game.

The Tigers (0-2) had their moments and went to halftime down by seven, but Red Oak (2-0) built the lead to 42-21 when Tristan Flatt scored on the first play of the fourth quarter and then Flatt scored in the final seconds to apparently rub it in on the scoreboard.

“We’ve just got to get better,’’ Corsicana coach Steve Hoffman said. “I say it every week, and it’s a broken record, but we’ve just got to tackle better.

“We’re working and we’re going to get better.’’

Corsicana quarterback Devontay Bell ran for 134 yards on 18 carries and scored two touchdowns, and completed 4 of 14 passes for 76 yards, and sophomore tailback Tray Owens had his second 100-yard night, rushing for 125 yards on 27 carries. Owens also returned a kickoff 70 yards to the red Oak 30 to set up a TD in the second quarter. But it wasn’t enough.

Red Oak QB Logan Thompson, who left the game with an injury late in the third quarter, rushed for 107 yards on 16 carries and completed 7 of 9 passes for 148 yards. He threw TD passes of 45 and 21 yards and TD runs of 8 and 2 yards in the first half to lead the Hawks. He connected with Travier Jackson for a 21-yard TD with 4:15 left in the third to lift Red Oak to a 35-21 lead, and he had a 30-yard run to set up Flatt’s touchdown that all but ended it for Corsicana.

The Tigers drove to the Red Oak 31, 40 and 4 yard lines in the second half but couldn’t get into the end zone.

Like wild first halves?

You would have loved that NASCAR race in the first half at Tiger Stadium, where the two teams played tag your it, combining  for 49 points and 436 yards of offense. Red Oak scored with 14 seconds left before the half on a Thompson 2-yard run to go to the break leading 28-21.

The difference? Corsicana drove to the Red Oak 18 on its first possession and fumbled the ball away on a bad handoff. That’s the only time the Tigers didn’t score in the first half. A punter was not needed.

Each team punted just once all night.

Bell scored early and late in the first half on runs of 5 and 8 yards, and Donovan Fields took advantage of Tray Owens’ 70-yard kickoff return to the 30 and -- after a personal foul moved the ball to the Red Oak 15 -- Fields scored his first TD of the season on a 15-yard run. He ran for a two-point conversion to knot the score at 14-14 with 10:53 left in the half.

Thompson made his best pass of the night, hitting Shedrick Collins for a 45-yard, but the Tigers bounced right back, driving 76 yards on 13 plays after staying alive on a fourth and 3 at the 19. Bell fumbled the snap, then darted four yards for the first down. Bell capped off the drive with an 8-yard run after faking one way and racing the other, going untouched into the end zone with 4:49 left in the half. Ryan Condley’s PAT knotted it at 21-21.

The Tigers came close to turning the game around in the third when Red Oak lost a fumble on a play that turned into a crazy goose chase. Down 28-21, the Hawks coughed it up, and Corsicana’s Kennan Dowell had the loose  ball at the Hawks 20 and open field ahead of him, but he couldn’t hang on and the Tigers watched in frustration as the ball — that could have had a Corsicana TD written on it — bounced out of bounds.

It was that kind of night.
