Navarro hoops: Bulldogs win finale, but not tourney berth (Updated w/ Region XIV Tournament bracket)

Navarro, Kilgore tie for conference lead; Rangers win tiebreaker

From Staff Reports
Corsicana Daily Sun

— Navarro ended its two-game winning streak Saturday, but didn't get the help it needed in Tyler.

The Runnin' Bulldogs pulled away from Trinity Valley, winning 67-56 in Athens on the final Saturday of the regular season.

The Bulldogs didn't get the help they needed in Tyler though, as the Apaches fell to Kilgore, 70-62. Navarro and Kilgore finished the Region XIV regular season tied with 15-4 records.

But its Kilgore that gets the automatic berth to the NJCAA National Tournament later this month. Navarro and Kilgore split their two games. The Rangers own the next tiebreaker -- best record in your zone. Kilgore went 10-2 against the East Zone while Navarro went 9-3 with two losses to Tyler.

Navarro can still win its way into the national tournament this week in the Region XIV Tournament. The Bulldogs can clinch by winning three games and claiming their fourth regional title in five years. Or Navarro can clinch a trip to Hutchinson, site of the national tourney, if the Bulldogs reach the regional final and Kilgore makes it too.

Navarro will open the Region XIV Tournament as the No. 2 seed on Thursday at 6 p.m. against UT-Tyler.  The Bulldogs will play the winner of the Tuesday game matching the No. 7 and 10 seeds in the tournament.

Toney Foster led Navarro on Saturday with 19 points on 8 of 16 shooting. He had six rebounds, five steals and two assists. Princeton Onwas had 11 points, four rebounds, an assist and a steal. Jaleel Cousins had nine points and seven rebounds.
