The Corsicana Tigers are district champions in tennis once again.
The Tigers clinched the District 16-4A title on Tuesday with a 16-3 win on the road in Jacksonville. The Tigers (12-4, 5-0) advanced to the Class 4A Region II tournament for the 28th straight year. The regional tournament is in Denton on Oct. 25-26.
“What a great day for Tiger tennis,” Tigers coach Chad White said. “We won a district championship for the first time in five years. Our players have worked hard and really came together as a team this fall. I’m very proud of them. They deserved it.”
The Tigers dominated in doubles. The boys won all three matches with Johnathan Castan and Brandon Levenson, Ben Crocker and Tyler Schultz and Eric Melton and Vicente Castillo. Girls doubles winners were Maggie Phinney and Caroline Kennemore and Michelle Cho and Melany Betancourt. Christian Minniear and Katie Miller won in mixed doubles.
Singles winners were Castan, Levenson, Crocker, Schultz, Thadius Lane and Jacob Middleton. Girls singles winners were Kennemore, Betancourt, Autumn Grounds and Cecilia Hernandez. Also contributing to the district title with key wins during the season were Grounds and Ellen Yates in doubles.
The Tigers started their district title streak in 1985. Coaches during the run have been Brett Kendall and Robin Blake (1985-96), Jason White (1996-2010) and Chad White (2010-current). Phillip Keltner has been the Tigers assistant coach the last 17 years.
