Boys Bi-District Basketball: Wortham 47, Big Sandy 43

Bulldogs hold on to beat Big Sandy

MABANK — For LD Freeman, it was all about making 3-pointers at the right time.

Wortham’s junior guard hit a 3-pointer with seconds left in the third quarter, and another for the first points of the fourth period as the Bulldogs built an 11-point lead, then held on for a 47-43 victory over Big Sandy in the Class 1A bi-district playoffs on Tuesday night in Mabank.

Wortham (21-9) advances to play Waco Rapoport on Friday night in an area-round game in Riesel. Big Sandy lost to a Golden Circle team for the second year in a row in bi-district, falling to Kerens last season.

Wortham had a 25-23 lead at halftime and led by as many as nine points in the third quarter before four straight points, including a 3-pointer by Big Sandy’s Russell Ditto, cut the Bulldogs lead to 36-31 with 1:36 left in the period. Big Sandy then had a chance to make it a one-possession game, but a turnover at midcourt set up Freeman’s trey from the top of the 3-point arc with four seconds left in the third quarter to give Wortham back a 39-31 lead.

Freeman then hit a 3-pointer to start the fourth quarter as Wortham took its biggest lead of the game at 42-33. Freeman finished with 18 points for the game.

“He’s really good,” Wortham coach Brian Coffman said. “If he’s on, the whole team feeds off him.”

Wortham had to hold on down the stretch. Daniel Trantham’s putback gave the Bulldogs a 45-41 lead with 2:33 left in the game. Big Sandy cut the lead to two, but free throws by Witty Busby and Rudy Miller made it a two-possession game at 47-43 with 24 seconds left.

The Bulldogs then played tough defense in the final seconds and Trantham and Kyle Chasteen finished the game doing what they did all night, dominating inside. They controlled the boards for most of the game.

“That helped us out a lot,” Coffman said. “Getting the big boys in there fighting. We had to rebound.”

The Cowboys started training camp the same week that Robert Newhouse died.
In a way, that’s very unfortunate for Jerry. Thinking back to the “Human Bowling Ball” and the teams of that era might lead to the inevitable comparisons to today’s product on the field.
