CHS Basketball: Tigers hit 20 wins

Next task: Keep the momentum going and make the playoffs

Corsicana — The Tigers reached one of their main goals with Tuesday night’s 49-40 road victory at Lindale. They hit the 20-win plateau.

If you follow basketball — college or high school — you know 20 wins in a season is a huge bench mark. And in Corsicana — where it hasn’t happened in 28 years — it’s a really big deal.

“It’s been a rally cry since this spring,” Tigers coach Don Newton said.

The Tigers (20-6, 2-2) had a spirited practice Wednesday as they get ready for Friday night’s home game against Nacogdoches. Corsicana currently sits in a third-place tie with John Tyler, two games behind Jacksonville, which rallied for a dramatic 50-49 victory over the Lions at home on Tuesday night.

Whitehouse, which also came back from a large first-half deficit to beat Nacogdoches, is in second place at 3-1 (the top four teams make the playoffs in 16-4A).

Senior Dzifa Mallet, who transferred to Corsicana from basketball crazy Duncanville when he was a sophomore, said 20 wins has been at the top of his teammates’ goals list.

“It’s a real big deal,” Mallet said. “It’s an accomplishment we’ve been trying to reach since I got here. We didn’t have anyone to show us the way. Coach Newton showed us how. Now we want to pass that on the younger generation.”

Girls feeling confident: The Lady Tigers lost 60-54 at Lindale, but still came with a confidence boost playing the 16-4A leaders and the No. 14 team in the state to another close game.

Corsicana (15-14, 1-5) still is very much in the playoff race. Whitehouse and Jacksonville both lost Tuesday night, leaving them a game ahead of the Lady Tigers in the standings.

“We played well,” Corsicana coach Art Prevost said. “We are ready now.”

The Lady Tigers trailed Lindale by 14 points in the fourth quarter and had possession in a two-point game in the final three minutes.
