Corsicana pitcher Holden Grounds added one final award to his long and impressive resume on Thursday when he was named to the Collin Street Bakery Texas Sports Writers Association Class 4A all-state baseball team on Thursday.
Grounds, who will be going to Navarro College in the fall, was named to the second team.
He was the Daily Sun’s Golden Circle Most Valuable Player of the Year for 2013.
Grounds went 11-1 with an 0.93 ERA. He struck out 109 batters in just 68 innings and had a team-high batting average of .463 with a home run, 16 doubles and 20 RBIs.
Grounds joins a group of Golden Circle players who were named to all-state teams this week.
Mildred’s Nic Shimonek was named to the Collin Street Bakery TSWA Class 2A state second-team baseball team on Tuesday.
Shimonek was the Daily Sun’s Golden Circle Offensive Player of the Year. He hit .514 with 19 extra base hits and drove in 27 runs.
Kerens outfielder Brett Anderson, a junior who was also a pitcher, was named to the 1A all-state first team when that team was announced on Monday.
Anderson was the Daily Sun’s Golden Circle Pitcher of the Year. He went 6-2 with a 1.58 ERA with 77 strikeouts.
He was the District 19-1A Offensive Player of the Year after batting .603 with 12 extra base hits. He drove in 32 runs.
Frost pitcher Jacob Stroder was named to the 1A all-state third team and five other Golden Circle players made the honorable mention list, including four from Dawson.
Stroder was a Golden Circle first-team player and the District 14-1A Player of the Year. He went 5-2 with a 1.80 ERA and had 80 strikeouts in just 37 innings.
Dawson’s Trent Underwood, a junior pitcher, catcher Mark Martinez, a senior, Jarod Grat, a sophomore shortstop, and Louis Lachney, a senior third baseman, were all named to the honorable mention list. Kerens’ D.J. Kamp, a junior second baseman who was the Golden Circle Defensive Player of the Year, also made the honorable mention list.
