GC Softball/Baseball: Weekend Roundup -- BG snaps MIldred's streak

Corsicana — Senior catcher Steely Southard scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the eighth inning Friday night to lift Blooming Grove to a 6-5 win over 6th-ranked Mildred, forcing a tie for first place in the District 23-2A softball standings. The win snapped Mildred’s district three-year winning streak.

Falcon Thompson earned the win on the mound win for BG. She scattered 10 hits over eight innings, allowing one earned run while striking out five batters and walking four.

Mildred scored two runs in the top of the seventh, but the Lady Lions responded with a pair of runs in their last at-bat to force the extra inning. Sarah Conger was hit by a pitch and Brooke Koscielniak reached on a fielder's choice, and then both crossed home plate on Mariah Horner's two-run single to right-center field to knot things at 5-5.

Horner and Southard both finished 2 for 3 at the plate to lead Blooming Grove.

Southard scored a run, drove in another and stole two bases, while Horner scored one and drove in two. Danielle Lima was 2 for 2 and scored a run, while Sidney Horner finished 2 for 4, scored once and stole a base. Brittany Nichols had an RBI-single for Blooming Grove, while Koscielniak and Rachel East also had hits.


Corsicana 13, Nacogdoches 8

The Tigers improved to 3-0 in the District 16-4A race with a wild win. Corsicana led 5-1 and hen fell behind 7-5 before erupting for six runs in the bottom of the sixth to put the game away.

Frost 7, Italy 2

Jae Moore improved to 6-0 on the mound while Hillaree Schwartz went 2 for 3, scored twice and drove in two runs to lead Frost at the plate. Madison Revill went 2 for 4 and drove in two runs and Jennifer Andrews went 1 for with a triple.The Lady Polar Bears are now 6-0 overall and 2-0 in district play.

  • GC Baseball/Softball: Mildred names Zamzow new baseball coach; AD Chambliess to coach softball again

         The Mildred Eagles didn’t have to go far to find a new baseball coach to replace Aaron Tidwell, who left the diamond to take the job as the principal of Mildred High School.
        On Saturday, Mildred named softball coach Brett Zamzow its new baseball coach as Zamzow, who was Tidwell's assistant for five years,  moves back to baseball after spending a year coaching softball.
        To complete the move Mildred Athletic Director Billy Dan Chambliess will take over the softball team. Chambliess, who is the head football coach, spent fours years coaching softball before becoming the school’s AD last year. All four of his teams won district titles.

    His father was a head coach for years at Pecos High and his brother-in-law is the head football coach at DeSoto, but Lawrence Williams Jr., a man who loves coaching football, never had any ideas about being the head man.
    “I love coaching,'' said Williams as he sat at his desk in Blooming Grove, where he became the Lions' head coach this summer. “I just never thought about being the head coach and I never applied to be a head coach. With this job I can still coach.''
