Just about everyone who knows Marqueshia Kelly just knew she would be getting a basketball scholarship to play in college, and just about everyone who knows Kelly will be surprised when they find the Kerens senior has made an oral commitment to accept a volleyball scholarship to Paris Community College.
There were schools that wanted Kelly on the basketball court, but she made the pivot this week and told Paris she would be coming there to play volleyball. She plans on signing an official letter-of-intent net week.
Kelly, a 5-10 dynamo, is a two-sport superstar at Kerens, where she recently helped the girls basketball team reach the Class 1A D-I state final.
She has been a big part of the volleyball program, which has gone from infancy six years ago to the third round of the state playoffs, and when Kelly signs she will become the first girl from Kerens to earn a college scholarship in volleyball.
She was a consistent member of the All-Golden Circle Volleyball team, and in her senior season
Kelly was named the All-Golden Circle Co-Offensive Player of the year. She was also named the District 14-1A Defensive Player of the Year after a season in which she had 304 kills, 165 blocks and 87 digs and helped Kerens advance to the third round of the state playoffs — the best in the school's history.
