GC Basketball: Kerens boys ready for Region III challenge

Road to regionals, Austin paved with quality opponents

Corsicana — One thing is certain after watching the first few weeks of the playoffs – Region III, boys or girls, is a bear.

The Kerens LadyCats found out Tuesday night, losing in double overtime to Slocum. It kept the LadyCats from advancing to the regional tournament and from making back-to-back state tournament appearances.

The Kerens boys are trying to do get back to Austin again too, and Bobcats coach Don Enis knows that the road is paved with district champions and difficult opponents. Big Sandy put up a big fight in the bi-district game, falling to Kerens 70-62.

Kerens (22-7) faces a big hurdle against Waco Rapoport (27-4) in the Region III-1A DI area round at 6 p.m. Friday night in Buffalo.

"There are eight or nine teams that can make it to Austin out of Region III," Kerens coach Don Enis said. "Region III is loaded."

Another tough test will come from Rapoport, which won two out of three games in district against Mart (including a 45-42 win in a first-place playoff game last week).

Rapoport has several top scorers including Patrick Listach and Alvin Daniliuc. Xavier Jackson had a clutch 3-pointer in the win over Mart.

Kerens is built to deal with it. The Bobcats may not be as good on defense after graduating Paul Williams. But they're a better shooting team, Enis said.

There's the consistency of Tobyus Thomas inside and the lethan outside shooting of sophomore guard Nate Betts.

Betts averaged 21 points in district. He's coming off of a 34-point effort against Big Sandy. Betts can go to the basket like Williams, and also hit a mid-range shot and a 3-pointer.

"He's filled in on offense and beyond," Enis said.
