NJCAA Basketball: Bulldogs need a win at Trinity Valley

Navarro, Kilgore tied in East Zone

Corsicana — Navarro has controlled its destiny the entire conference season. The question is what will happen now that the Runnin' Bulldogs don't?

Navarro needs to end a two-game winning streak at Trinity Valley on Saturday night, and also have Kilgore lose at Tyler to win the Region XIV regular season title and earn an automatic berth to the national tournament.

Navarro plays Trinity Valley (19-10, 10-8) at 6 p.m. Athens. Kilgore plays at 4 p.m. at Tyler. So the Runnin' Bulldogs, at least their coaches, should know if they're still in the running for the conference title as Navarro and Trinity Valley will start right around the time Tyler and Kilgore are finished.

Navarro coach Johnny Estelle said he probably won't tell his team the Tyler-Kilgore final.

"I don't think so," Estelle said.

Navarro (23-7, 14-4) and Kilgore (14-4) are tied with a game to go in the standings, but the Rangers hold the tiebreaker edge with a better record in the East Zone. So the Bulldogs have to win Saturday and have Kilgore lose.

Kilgore won the first matchup 54-45 with Tyler, but the Apaches (21-7, 12-6) haven't lost a conference home game at Wagstaff Gymnasium.

Navarro will have to cut down on fouls, especially on the road on sophomore night in Athens. Kilgore and Tyler have combined to shoot 105 free throws in the last two games, a big reason for the Bulldogs' late-season losing streak.
