The Tigers forced a Game 3 in the Region II-4A bi-district playoff round with old rival Waxahachie with a 10-3 win Friday night at Richards Park in Waxahachie.
The win sets up a rematch at Price Field Saturday at 1 p.m. to decide the series. The two teams met last season in a three-game series that the Indians eventually won to eliminate the Tigers in the third round. The Tigers look to avenge that loss on Saturday.
The Tigers pounded out 11 hits to plate 10 runs including five extra base hits. The offensive explosion was more than enough for ace Holden Grounds who gave up three runs on three hits and had nine strikeouts and three walks.
The Tigers got the scoring started quickly as Brady Harlan singled up the middle with one out. Holden Grounds followed with an opposite field home run to score two. Hunter Denbow who has been playing with a back injury drove a 1-1 fastball over the left field fence to take a 3-0 lead into the bottom of the first.
David Martinelli led off the bottom of the first with a fly ball to center field that Zane Otten misplayed and Martinelli ended up at second base. He then moved to third on a sacrifice fly and scored on a ground out.
Waxahachie was able to convert a leadoff walk by starting pitcher Trent Armstrong in the third inning into a run without a hit. They then tied the game in the fifth after Armstrong leadoff the inning with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. He scored on a sacrifice fly by second basemen John Castellanos.
The Tigers responded quickly in the top of the sixth when Grounds lead off the inning with a stand up double off the centerfield fence. Denbow grounded a ball up the middle that Martinelli made a nice play to get the out at first base but courtesy runner Reid Folmar moved to third base. Zane Otten then drilled a ball into left field to score Folmar to give the Tigers a 4-3 lead.
However the Tigers weren't through yet. After Otten moved to second on a wild pitch, Bobby Lopez hit a double off the left field wall to score Otten. The Tigers loaded the bases with a walk to Zack Rash and a bunt hit by Aaron Cantu. Lopez then scored on a passed ball to complete the scoring.
Grounds came out in the bottom of the sixth and had a perfect inning. The Tigers then scored four more runs in the top of the seventh that was highlighted by a bases loaded double to right field by Lopez that emptied the bases and give him four RBIs on the night. Lopez later scored on a wild pitch to complete the scoring.
Grounds allowed two base runners to reach in the seventh but was able to strike out Castellanos to end the game.
