— The Tiger Softball team traveled to Burkburnett to take part in their annual 32 team tournament this past weekend.

After a shaky start against Iowa Park on Friday, losing 3-1, the Tigers bounced back to win four straight and win their bracket.

Hard hit balls, great pitching by Sidney Kirk with 18 total strikeouts, and overall aggressive play were the keys to the Tigers’ success.

After the slow start, the following 4 games were a complete turnaround for a Tiger team that is still young and learning how to finish games on the winning side.

The second game on Friday saw the Tigers beat Amarillo High, 4-1, with aggressive base running, strategic bunt placement and errorless defense.

Saturday’s games started with a win over Henrietta in 30 degree weather with snow falling most of the game. Sidney Kirk led the charge, hitting two, 3 run home runs and was one walk away from a perfect game. Final score, 20-0.

The semifinal game on Saturday pitted the Tigers against the Amarillo Caprock Lady Horns. Raylee Smithart hit her first home run of the year, a line drive in the left-center alley, to lead the Tigers to an 11-1 victory and a shot at the championship game.

The final game of the tournament, against a perennial playoff team from Holliday, was nothing short of exciting. The Tigers stayed consistent on offense and defense, giving up only three runs and scoring eight.

A well balanced team to start off the season, the offensive numbers being put up by the Tigers are a sign of things to come.  The tournament saw the Tiger team becoming aggressive at the plate, banging out 40 hits, of which 8 were doubles, two triples and three home runs. That aggressive approach offensively also included having a total of 15 batters hit by pitches.

The weekend saw the Tigers overall record move to 8-2.
