CHS Girls Hoops: Lady Tigers lose to China Spring, 58-48

Melendez scores 17 points in loss

Corsicana — Erica Melendez made some big shots. And the Lady Tigers did everything they could in the second half to overcome a talented China Spring team.

They just couldn’t get there.

Melendez scored 17 points, including an 8-point barrage in the fourth quarter, but Corsicana lost 58-48 on Tuesday night at Tiger Gym.

It was Corsicana’s first loss of the season. And they’ll have to make a quick turnaround with the Janie Biltz Classic starting Thursday at Tiger Gym.

“We had our chances,” Prevost said. “They’re very physical. Their posts hurt us.”

It didn’t help the Lady Tigers that Tamera White, one of their best inside players, was injured in a collision in the first quarter.

China Spring led from the start, building a 21-11 lead on a bank shot by Re’Elle Miller.

The Lady Tigers went on a 5-1 run to end the half as Kennedy Betts and Calae Wilson made hoops and Ernisha Ballard made a free throw to make it 26-21 China Spring at halftime.

Corsicana opened the third quarter on a 7-2 run as Erica Melendez sparked the run with a 3-pointer to open the half.

The game was tied at 30-30 on a layup by Briana Biltz, but China Spring again went on a run, this time 13-3.

It included a strange sequence in which Corsicana committed three straight fouls trying to get positioning on China Spring free-throw attempts.

Again trailing 47-35, Melendez made two 3-pointers and a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 47-43. But China Spring answered with an 8-1 run to put the game away.
