Second-half explosion fuels 44-27 Hubbard win over Frost

FROST —   — FROST — Hubbard wasted little time overcoming a first half deficit, then got defensive against previously unbeaten Frost.

The Jaguars scored 32 second-half points, never punted, and came up with a key stop in a 44-27 win over the Polar Bears Friday night at Joe Parum Field.

It was the District 9-1A Division II opener for both schools, each considered a playoff team.

Frost (6-1, 0-1) led at the half, 15-12, after third-leading rusher Woody Woods — a key component in the Bears’ three-man rushing attack — was injured on the opening kickoff. He never returned.

The Polar Bears got gritty production on the ground from Robert Worley and Danial Steels, who each had 54 yards at the break. Worley put the Bears ahead when he took a fourth-and-4 reverse from Steels 39 yards to the end zone.

Hubbard (5-2, 1-0) stormed back to take the lead, getting a 4-yard run from Logan McClinton, and a 51-yard Casen Martin-to-D’Warren Simmons touchdown pass to take a short-lived 12-7 lead. Martin and Simmons would end coming up big time and time again for the Jaguars.

But Frost answered with a nine-play drive, ending with a 1-yard Jacob Stroder sneak, to go up 15-12 at the half. Frost had the momentum, but Hubbard received the second half kickoff.

It was a steady dose of McClinton, Trey Henderson and Martin-to-Simmons that turned the tide.

Martin hit Simmons for 32 yards on the opening drive of the third, setting up his 14-yard run. His first of three second-half two-point conversion runs gave Hubbard a 20-15 lead.

Frost had something cooking on its next drive, but a holding call turned what would have been a second-and-6 at Hubbard’s 20 into first-and-19. The next three plays netted minus-2 yards, and on fourth-and-21 a reverse throwback by Worley to Stroder was snuffed out at the line of scrimmage, and the Bears turned the ball over on downs.

Hubbard responded with a 12-play, four and a half minute drive that included a holding call that wiped out a 32-yard McClinton gain, and a chop-block penalty that led to a first-and-24 after McClinton had gone 37 yards for a score.

Three plays later, Martin hit Simmons for the first of two second half 51-yard touchdown passes, and Hubbard had a 13-point lead late in the third.

Frost again came back, with Stroder completing his only two passes on a scoring drive that featured a 30-yard screen to Cade Rigamonti, who replaced Woods, and a 6-yard touchdown to Josh Riojas on a fleaflicker.

Hubbard needed one-play to push the lead back to two touchdowns, as McClinton went right, made a move to elude several tacklers at the Frost 45, cut back across the field and went on to score from 57 yards out.

Hubbard’s Bradley Walker, a preseason all-state pick, played a handful of plays in the first half, but netted a yard on one carry. The Jaguars didn’t need him. McClinton had 150 yards 13 carries, and Henderson added 80 on 14 carries. Martin had 56 yards on nine attempts.

Simmons hauled in all four of Martin’s completions for 165 yards.

Worley led Frost with 98 yards on 14 carries, while Steels added 89 on 18.
