That little blip of offensive production would be the Spartans’ last series of more than eight plays as Navarro’s offense took over.
Godfrey connected with Jolly for the third time this season, covering 38 yards for a 28-7 lead with 6:22 left in the first half. Fullback Grogan, carrying for only the second time this season, scored from 9 yards out to boost the lead to 28. Corsicana’s Washington closed the explosive first half with a 14-yard touchdown run. Hampered the last two weeks by an injured knee, Washington swept left, bulled over a defender and scooted into the end zone for his first collegiate touchdown. Washington would finish with 24 yards on six carries and one catch of 8 yards.
With a commanding 42-7 lead entering the second half, the Bulldogs stepped up the offensive pressure as Mitchell bashed his way in from 1 yard after bruising runs of 13 and 19 yards on Navarro’s opening drive of the third stanza.
Toler came on for Godfrey midway in the third quarter and he immediately had a huge impact, lofting a perfect 67-yard scoring pass to Steward for a 56-7 lead.
Toler later scored himself from 1 yard and had Coleman’s memorable scoring reception with 1:07 left.
“This was a really good day for us in a lot of different areas,” Mayper said. “The biggest and most important was that we won.”
There was little doubt of that result all day.
