GC Football: Week 8 Preview Capsules

Corsicana — Rice at Mildred

RECORDS: Class 2A Rice is 3-4, 2-2 in District 6-2A DII. Mildred is 6-1, 4-0.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Rice: RB/LB Ragan Henderson, FB/LB Chris Atchley, RB/LB Raven Huffman, OL/DE Justin Smith. Mildred: RB/DB Jeremy Ballard, WR/DB Jase Butler, L Danny Hanna, L Austin Pair.

UPDATE: Rice is coming off a 42-9 win over Millsap, Mildred a 56-18 victory over Tolar … the two teams have not met since 2009, when Mildred won, 38-7 … they have met eight times since Rice began playing varsity football again in 1998, with the Eagles winning all eight by a combined score of 362-48 … Atchley has eclipsed the 100-yard mark in consecutive weeks and has 564 yards rushing for the season … Smith had a 50-yard INT return for a TD last week … Henderson continues to pace Golden Circle rushers with 1,408 yards and 18 TDs; he has 3 more scores receiving … this game features the area’s top two scorers, as Mildred RB Draylon Sterling has 20 TDs (17 rush) … Sterling is 60 yards away from 1,000 … Mildred QB Nic Shimonek played in the ’09 game as a freshman, and was 6 of 11 for 105 yards and a TD … the Eagles continue to have the GC’s No. 1 offense, averaging 472.2 yards and 52.1 points per game … Mildred has punted only 10 times all season, only twice in district … Ballard has a team-high 5 INTs.

RECORDS: Class 1A Dawson is 0-7, 0-1 in District 9-1A DII. Class 1A Frost is 7-1, 1-1 in District 9-1A DII.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Dawson: RB/DB Ty Skinner, OL/LB Jake Strother, WR/DB Marvin Manning, TE/DE Louis Lachney. Frost: LB Damian Hernandez, OL Colton McGill, FB/LB Cade Rigamonti, WR/DB Josh Rojas.

UPDATE: Dawson has just three more chances in 2012 to pick up their first win since 2010 … they will have their work cut out for them on the road this Friday against a rolling Frost team … the Polar Bears have recorded just one loss this season … that slip up came against district foe Hubbard two weeks ago … Frost is among the Golden Circle leaders in team offense and defense, scoring offense and defense, and boasts a pair of the area’s top rushers in Danial Steels and Robert Worley … the Bulldogs bring their own talented rushing attack to the table, however … Dalton Long averages 6.6 yards per carry for Dawson this season … RB Skinner has become a productive receiving threat out of the Bulldog backfield as well … last year the Polar Bears plowed past Dawson, 42-14, behind a 191-yard, four touchdown rushing performance by Woody Woods … Worley racked up 106 total yards with a pair of scores in that Frost victory … Long tallied 79 yards on the ground while Strother and Skinner accounted for Dawson’s two scores in the 2011 meeting.

  • GC Baseball: Mildred falls to Riesel, 9-0, on the road

    Mildred managed a hit and struck out 12 times in a 9-0 loss on the road that could have given the Eagles some cushion in the 23-2A standings. They are now 5-6 with a game at league-leading Teague Tuesday.

    That tough and gutsy style of play sent both the boys and girls teams into the playoffs and on Thursday the Tigers were rewarded again for their fine seasons as two boys won special honors,four boys were named to the All-District first team and two girls earned first-team honors.
    Michael Roman, who did a little of everything — and did it well — was named the District 28-4A Utility Player of the Year, and sophomore defender Jesus Barreto was named the district's Newcomer of the Year.

    There's nothing quite like signing day, and Taylor Ames was all smiles and beaming about her future Wednesday when she signed a letter-of-intent, accepting a basketball scholarship to Cloud County Community College in Kansas in front of family, friends and coaches at Kerens, where Ames leaves a legacy like no other.

    Minutes after Navarro split a doubleheader with Paris on Wednesday, Navarro softball Coach Jessica Karenke was told her Bulldogs had just been nationally ranked and are now No. 16 in the NJCAA national softball poll.
    She had no idea.
    And she didn't care.
    Karenke is worried about what happens on the diamond, and she had some concerns after Navarro made four errors in the second game that opened the door for Paris to pull off a 7-2 win after the Bulldogs and Ciara Luna controlled the first game with a 4-1 win.

    Lindale has been poison to Corsicana all year.
    The Eagles won a bizarre game in Lindale to keep the Tigers out of the football playoffs and ruined the boys basketball season with two gut-wrenching wins in the final week of the season.
    They did it again Tuesday, beating the Tigers 4-0 at Price Field to take over second place in the District 16-4A race.
    Lindale (6-2) had one big inning to hand Corsicana (5-3) its second loss in a row.

    She prayed about it. She lost sleep about it. And she prayed about it some more.
    That's just a glimpse of what Marqueshia Kelly went through before deciding to turn down a half dozen basketball scholarships and accept a scholarship to play volleyball at Paris Junior College.
    The journey might have been a little sleepless, but in the end it wasn't that tough for Kelly, who is a multi-sport star at Kerens.
    “I followed my heart,'' she said on Tuesday just moments after signing a letter-of-intent to play volleyball at Paris in front of family, coaches and friends.

    Corsicana's tennis team finished its season with a  strong showing in the Class 4A Regional Tournament at UT-Arlington before falling to some powerhouse players from Dallas.

  • GC Baseball/Softball: Roundup -- Blooming Grove edges Mildred 1-0 (Adds Dawson-Hubbard baseball)

    Blooming Grove kept its baseball playoff hopes alive, winning a pitcher’s duel, 1-0, in Mildred Tuesday night. Dalton Blake struck out 11 and scattered five hits in a well-pitched game that took an hour and a half to complete.
