PLAYERS TO WATCH: Wortham: RB Tyvon Freeman, RB/P Shane Sykora, NT Cameron Lewis, RB/DB Kyle Goener, DE Steven Hutson.  Hubbard: FB/LB Trey Henderson, WR/DB D’Warren Simmons, QB Casen Martin, OL/DL Kenyon Mathis, LB Alex Jimenez.

UPDATE: Wortham dropped a 49-13 decision at home to Frost last week ... Hubbard had the district’s open week after taking a tough 44-27 road win ... the Bulldogs actually scored first against Frost before the Polar Bears turned three second-quarter turnovers into scores ... In their win at Frost, the Jaguars rebounded from a 15-12 halftime deficit with four TDs in the second half ... Wortham has switched QBs with Brandon Campbell throwing for 540 yards and 4 TDs ...  Hubbard WR D’Warren Simmons had a huge game at Frost with four receptions for 168 yards and 2 TDs ... RBs Trey Henderson and Logan McClinton split rushing duties in the Jags’ last game in the continued absence of all-state RB Bradley Walker who is still nursing an injury suffered in the Bosqueville loss on Sept. 7 ... Hubbard leads the all-time series 24-5 between the two clubs and is 10-2 since 2000 when the two opponents have met every year ... Wortham’s last win in the series was a 35-8 home victory in 2010 when Hubbard finished 0-10.

PLAYERS TO WATCH: Kerens: QB Nate Betts, RB Rayvon Faulk, WR Brett Anderson, LB Mike Kline, WR/DB Lane Green. Cross Roads: LB Shawn Himes, OL Seth McGlaun, DB Taylor Johnson, DL Chase Lopez, WR Chad Sherrell.

UPDATE: Kerens evened its district record with a 28-6 victory over Dallas Gateway ... the Bobats average 356 yards per game on offense ... Betts continues to improve in the passing game, completing 45.5 percent of his passes ...  Betts is fourth in the Golden Circle in passing with 557 yards .. he has 11 interceptions, also the most in the area ... Anderson continues to put up spectacular numbers with 20 receptions for 440 yards and seven TDs ... Kerens’ defense allowed only 173 yards and is sixth in the area giving up 292 yards per game ... the Bobcats forced three more turnovers for 15 takeaways this season ... Cross Roads lost to Italy 49-2 last week ... the Bobcats have a new coach, Brad Wallace, who replaced former Kerens assistant Steve Almuete ... Cross Roads’ lone win came in the season opener against winless Dawson 36-34.

    Former Mildred quarterback and Golden Circle Del Thrash Player of the Year Nic Shimonek is leaving the University of Iowa after one red-shirt year and transferring to Texas Tech because of Iowa's pro-style offense.

  • GC Baseball/Softball: Mildred names Zamzow new baseball coach; AD Chambliess to coach softball again

         The Mildred Eagles didn’t have to go far to find a new baseball coach to replace Aaron Tidwell, who left the diamond to take the job as the principal of Mildred High School.
        On Saturday, Mildred named softball coach Brett Zamzow its new baseball coach as Zamzow, who was Tidwell's assistant for five years,  moves back to baseball after spending a year coaching softball.
        To complete the move Mildred Athletic Director Billy Dan Chambliess will take over the softball team. Chambliess, who is the head football coach, spent fours years coaching softball before becoming the school’s AD last year. All four of his teams won district titles.

    His father was a head coach for years at Pecos High and his brother-in-law is the head football coach at DeSoto, but Lawrence Williams Jr., a man who loves coaching football, never had any ideas about being the head man.
    “I love coaching,'' said Williams as he sat at his desk in Blooming Grove, where he became the Lions' head coach this summer. “I just never thought about being the head coach and I never applied to be a head coach. With this job I can still coach.''
