Corsicana — Want an indication of how far Navarro’s volleyball team has come recently? It was there Wednesday night when the Bulldogs gave nationally-ranked Paris all it wanted in a four-set loss.

Paris, ranked 11th in the nation, prevailed, 25-21, 25-19, 23-25, 25-17 in front of a packed house at Bulldog Gymnasium.

Still, the high spirited and youthful Bulldogs gave the Lady Dragons a tough, gritty match, losing two close sets before taking their first win of the night by a 25-23 score.

The Lady Dragons led most of the third set before Navarro came storming back to tie things at 23-23 on a Hailee Showers’ kill that sent the Lady Bulldogs fans to their feet. Shortly after, Kelsi Schmidtberger powered her own kill over the net that was too hot to handle for the Lady Dragons to go up 24-23. On the next Bulldog serve, Paris’ T'asia Black hit the return out of bounds to help the Lady Bulldogs seal the victory.

Leading the way in the third set for Navarro were Showers, Schmidtberger, Lexy Wilson, Mikala Scales and Libby Libhart.

Showers had 20 kills for Navarro in 4 sets.

Bulldog coach Kasee McBrearty was pleased about the future for the Navarro volleyball program. McBrearty said she had 12 freshman on her team this year and her starting setter quit on Tuesday.

But McBrearty came away with a positive feeling about the match against Paris.

“We played tough tonight. We fought them from start to finish,” she said. “We are getting stronger in each game we play, and teams are not going to look forward to playing us.”

If Wednesday’s play was any indication of things to come for Navarro, then it would be safe to say the Lady Bulldogs’ future looks bright.

Paris was led by Andrea Hurt with over 10 kills along with Abby Phillips, T'asia Black and Jordan Strickland. The loss drops the Lady Bulldogs to 5-12 for the season and 0-3 in conference play.
