GC Volleyball: Roundup Kerens sails after being ranked No. 6 in state; Rice wins district game against Marlin, Frost, Wortham win district matches

Kerens — Kerens — Kristen Lynch found out Tuesday afternoon that her team was ranked No. 6 in the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s Class A state volleyball poll, but she didn’t know exactly how to tell her kids the news.

So she printed out copies of the state poll then took a pink marker and highlighted Kerens, which was right there at No. 6 in the state, and taped a copy of the poll on every girls locker so when they showed up after school to get ready for the trip to Cross Roads they could see just how far the program has come this season.

“We have never been ranked in volleyball,’’ said Lynch, whose team took the new ranking and soared with it, beating Cross Roads, 25-11, 25-18, 26-24 Tuesday night. “I hope we can start playing every game at that level of a ranked team. In basketball they are used to seeing themselves being ranked, but we’ve never been ranked in volleyball so I’m hoping this can jump-start them and take us to the next level. Hopefully, this will build their confidence.’’

The locker room exploded in celebration when kids saw the ranking.

“We were screaming, slapping high-fives and hugging,’’ said Taylor Ames, a senior captain who had an inspiring game against state ranked Cayuga on Friday when she came back from a stomach virus and played in discomfort. “We’ve really come together as a team. I think everyone has their head straight and we’re on the same page of what we want to do and where we want to go. We’re a pretty level-headed team.’’

Breanna Baxter said the minute she saw the ranking it hit her.

“When I saw it on my locker I just had a real good feeling inside and started smiling and then I was jumping up and down,’’ Baxter said. “It feels great to be ranked in volleyball. It most definitely will help us. When we see that it proves that we really are a good team and it makes us want to push to do even more.’’

Kerens was led in its sweep over Cross Roads by Ames (16 of 17 serving, 3 aces, 3 kills, 7 blocks, 25 assists, 3 digs), Tinesha Tolliver ( 10 of 12 serving, 4 kills, 2 aces, 1 block, 4 digs), Rheanna Baxter  (12 of 12 serving, 2 aces, 9 kills, 18 blocks, 3 digs), Cambree Betts (7 of 7 serving, 2 aces, 1 kill, 1 ace, 8 digs, 4 blocks), Daliyan Bivins ( 2 of 2 serving, 2 digs, 8 blocks), Emmanuella Armant (17 of 19 serving, 4 kills, 1 block, 3 digs), Marquesha Kelly (6 kills, 6 blocks, 2 digs), Kayla Kilcrease (7 of 7 serving).

The Mildred Eagles didn’t have to go far to find a new baseball coach to replace Aaron Tidwell, who left the diamond to take the job as the principal of Mildred High School.
On Saturday, Mildred named softball coach Brett Zamzow its new baseball coach as Zamzow, who was Tidwell's assistant for five years,  moves back to baseball after spending a year coaching softball.
To complete the move Mildred Athletic Director Billy Dan Chambliess will take over the softball team. Chambliess, who is the head football coach, spent fours years coaching softball before becoming the school’s AD last year. All four of his teams won district titles.
