GC Volleyball Roundup: Dawson shocks Kerens

Dawson —  The kids from Dawson were jumping up and down, hugging and shouting and hugging some more.

“They really celebrated. I’m surprised they didn’t hear us in Corsicana,’’ said Dawson volleyball coach Alica Sexton after her team had defeated No. 10 ranked Kerens, 23-25, 25-18, 26-24, 25-16, in the Dawson gym Tuesday night.

“I’m going to check with Waco. They might have heard us there.’’

The state, and especially the teams in District 14-1A, will hear from Dawson, a rising power that made a statement Tuesday.

Kerens (21-4) was ranked 10th in the state and hadn’t lost a match since last August. The Lady Cats were 9-0 in District 14-1A before Tuesday, and had beaten Dawson in four at Kerens earlier.

“We have been preparing for them for weeks,’’ said Sexton, who took over the program in August. “We have been doing a lot of blocking drills, and we have been watching a lot of film. We came out knowing we were going to play well and  expecting it, and that made the difference.’’

It could redefine Dawson’s season.

“We knew if we won we would wake up a lot of people,’’ Sexton said. “We are ready to make people think about playing Dawson.’’

Dawson is now 20-6 and 7-3 in the district with losses to Wortham, Cayuga and Kerens.

The Lady Bulldogs did a great job of going to the net with Kerens’ talented front line.

“Dawson was able to take my big girls (Markeshia Kelly and Breanna Baxter) out of the game,’’ Kerens coach Kristen Lynch said. “That was the difference. My team wins big games when those two have 15 or more kills each. Dawson is a good, scrappy team. They worked hard for every point and had a roaring crowd to back them up. The Lady Cats fought hard.

“We have to go to work this week and focus on finishing out district,’’ said Lynch, whose team is tied with Cayuga for first in the district. “We have key games with at home with Cayuga, Cross Roads and Wortham. My focus is to win first place. We are a winning team and can overcome this.’’

Dawson was led by Stephanie Lindsey (8 kills, 2 blocks, 26 digs), Demi Dotson (6 kills, 22 digs, 3 aces), Michaela Greer (3 blocks, 2 aces), Kaylee Martinez (13 assists, 8 aces) and libero Shelby Gist (25 digs).

Kerens was led by Tinesha Tolliver (12 of 12 serving, 1 ace, 6 kills, 3 digs), Taylor Ames (15 for 20 serving), Cambree Betts (13 for 17 serving, 2 kills, 1 block, 6 digs), Emmanuella Armant (7 of 8, 4 kills, 7 blocks, 5 digs)

Kelly (8 kills, 7 blocks), and Baxter (9 kills, 7 blocks, 13 for 14 serving, 1 ace).

“This was huge for us,’’ Sexton said. “No one can remember the last time Dawson beat Kerens.’’

Plenty of people will remember this one.
