GC Volleyball: Weekend roundup: Wortham makes move in District 14-1A Corsicana falls to Lindale, Kerens, Frost win

Corsicana — Wortham had a big weekend, beating Trinidad, 25-6, 25-5, 25-5 on Friday and winning a showdown with Dawson, 25-12, 25-16, 25-18 on Saturday to clinch a spot in the playoffs. The Lady Bulldogs (23-13) have won five in a row and play Kerens on Tuesday at Kerens for a chance to tie the Lady Cats for second place. Kerens is 11-2 and Wortham is 10-3 in District 14-1A.

Elisha Libhart (12 of 13 kills, 7 digs), Kierra Busby (8 of 9 kills), Trinity Shivers ( 4 of 5 kills), Kendle Rhodes (18 assists), Sara Sessions (8 digs) and  Katie Looney (6 digs) led Wortham against Trinidad.

Libhart (20 kills), Busby (10 kills, 9 blocks) and Shivers (5 kills, 1 block), Hannah McCord (4 kills) and Anderson (1 kill, 4 blocks) led Wortham at the net against Dawson. Anderson (18 of 18 serving), Sessions (14 of 14 serving, 21 digs), Looney (11 of 13 serving, 15 digs) and Rhodes (29 assists) all had big games against Dawson.

“The young ladies really stepped it up last week and played with a high level of intensity,’’ Wortham coach Johnny Ward said, “We continue to work hard in practice and it seems like we are peaking at the right time. We have qualified for the playoffs for the 15th year in a row.’’

Kerens wins

he state-ranked Lady Cats stayed in second place in the district race with a four-set win over Cross Roads, 24-26, 28-26, 25-17, 25-15.

Corsicana falls to state-ranked Lindale

Corsicana had a strong match against state-ranked Lindale, losing in four sets to the District 16-4A leader, 20-25, 25-23, 12-25, 13-25 at Lindale Friday. Briana Biltz (12 kills, 1 ace, 19 digs) and Caroline Biltz (10 kills, 2 aces, 14 digs) led the Tigers at the net while  Carley Cates (33 assists, 19 digs, 3 kills), and had a huge game for Corsicana, which was led by Cecilia Lopez (13 digs, 1 ace, 2.8 service-receive), Kim Moreno (10 digs, 2 aces, 2.4 service-receive), Teleia Braziel (8 digs), MacKenzie Lee (3 solo blocks, 5 assisted blocks, 1 ace), Kara Schlenk (3 aces, 2 digs) and Stephanie Willingham (6 kills, 2 digs, 1 assist).

Frost rolls

The state-ranked Lady Polar Bears swept Italy, 25-8, 25-13, 25-22 to win their 11th in a row on Friday. Frost (27-7 and 11-2 in District 13-1A) was led by Heather Montgomery (4 kills, 1 block, 1 ace), Hillaree Schwartz (4 kills, 10 assists, 2 aces), Jae Moore (15 kills, 1 block, 2 aces), Kaycee Bowling (16 assists, 2 kills, 2 aces), Madison Revil 914 of 14 serving, 4 kills) and Morgan Elmore (2 kills, 4 aces, 4 digs).
