Navarro Football: Bulldogs roll past Cisco, 58-10

Corsicana — CISCO — Tim Wright and Devin Lauderdale both had three touchdowns and the defense allowed less than 200 yards total offense as No. 2-ranked Navarro rolled past Cisco, 58-10, on Thursday at Chesley Field.

Wright rushed for a game-high 156 yards on 17 carries, scoring on runs of 28, 5 and 7 yards as the Bulldogs scored 30 straight points after falling behind 3-0 on Cisco’s first possession.

When Wright wasn’t lighting up the Cisco defense, it was the passing combination of quarterback Josh Greer and Lauderdale. They hooked up from 22 yards to open the second quarter and just before the half connected again from 79 yards.

Cisco (0-2, 0-1) managed 195 yards offense, 66 coming on a touchdown on the first play of the third period.

Navarro responded with 28 straight points. Cameron Washington rambled for a 5-yard TD, the Greer-to-Lauderdale combo went for a 59-yard TD completion and Wright scored from 7 yards. Backup quarterback Alex Allen added a 6-yard scoring run in the waning minutes for the Bulldogs (3-0, 1-0). Allen completed 2 of 4 passes for 24 yards.

Greer completed 21 of 28 passes for 300 yards. Greer is completing an uber-efficient 66.2 percent of his attempts this season.

Lauderdale was Greer’s favorite receiver with six receptions for 181 yards. Fellow receiver Austin Collins had seven catches for 62 yards in the first half.

Navarro churned 575 yards total offense and 29 first downs. Cisco’s offense struggled, particularly on the ground, where it managed just 32 yards on 34 attempts.

Save for the long touchdown pass, the Navarro defense yielded little to Cisco, keeping the Wranglers between the 20s much of the game while forcing four fumbles. Navarro eventually pulled its starters after three quarters, but the Bulldog reserves stymied a Cisco offense that used three quarterbacks.

Linebacker Chrishard Buhl recovered the lone lost fumble and cornerback Sherman Gilbert picked off a pass to set up the first Greer-to-Lauderdale touchdown in the second period.

Backup running back Ke’aun Kinner added 50 yards on eight fourth-quarter attempts, and Washington added 48 yards and touchdown rushing in addition to three catches.

Starting receiver Markel Steward-Gillespie recorded two catches for 18 yards and second-teamer Kailon Carter caught a pair of Allen passes for 21 yards late in the fourth period.

  • 4-24-14Bland.jpg GC Bi-District Softball: Mildred rips Trinity 10-1

    This was easy.
    Almost too easy.
It's going to get tougher on the road in the playoffs, and maybe that's why Mildred's 10-1 romp over Trinity in the opening game of the three-game series in the Class 2A bi-district round of the playoffs felt so good to the Lady Eagles.

There  were some bumps on the road and slides in the standings and a few bruises along the way, but five Golden Circle teams have reached the softball playoffs that begin with first round games on Thursday.
For Corsicana it was a wakeup call during the second half of district play that gave the Tigers the push they needed, and for Mildred it was the culmination of yet another splendid season as the Lady Eagles made the playoffs for the fifth straight season. Blooming Grove is back again, a regular in post season play with a chance to make a run, and Hubbard begins its quest to get to the state tournament and Austin with a one-game playoff on Thursday against Itasca in Italy.

  • NVSBAhearn.jpg Navarro Softball: Bulldogs split with Kilgore, win final home game

    Kristen Ahearn was mad, steaming.
Even her peanut butter and jelly sandwich that she ate between the doubleheader games didn't taste good. Nothing fit. Nothing was in sync. Nothing felt right or even tasted right.
    Then Ahearn found the cure.
Simple enough: Just go out and blast a three-run homer.
That's the short version of what happened Tuesday at Navarro College, where Ahearn's three-run bomb ignited the Bulldogs in the second game against Kilgore and Navarro went on to win 8-5 to close out its regular season with a bang and a smile from Ahearn.

    The wait is over.
And it came just in time for Brett Anderson, who left it all on the mound Tuesday night at Kerens, where he pitched a masterpiece to lead the Bobcats over Cayuga, 5-1, and help the program win its first baseball district title since 1981.
“I've got no gas left. I'm out,'' said Anderson, a senior lefty who stopped Cayuga cold, holding the three-time defending district champs to just three singles while striking out 14.
