RICE — The Navarro Bulldogs were eliminated from the Region XIV softball tournament on Saturday morning in Lufkin after a 3-1 loss to Galveston College.
The Lady Whitecaps scored all of their runs in the first inning on a RBI double and a two-run homerun.
Navarro loaded the bases in the second inning but could only come up with one run on a fielder's choice.
The Bulldogs were lead at the plate by Jade Havard, who had two of Navarro's three hits.
Cambry Helm took the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs. Ciara Luna pitched five scoreless innings in relief.
Navarro finished the season with a 36-15 record.
Angelina 6, Navarro 1
Angelina upset the Bulldogs, 6-1, in the second round game of the Region XIV Tournament in Lufkin.
The Bulldogs (36-14), who won the East Zone title, drop to the loser’s bracket, where they will play Galveston, which is ironically the top seed from the South Zone, at 10:00 a.m. Saturday.
They must win twice on Saturday and win again Sunday morning to get to the title game at 3:00 p.m. Sunday.
Navarro played well but didn’t generate enough at the plate to stay with Angelina, which broke a 1-1 tie on Kaitlyn Barker’s grand slam in the fourth.
The Bulldogs scored a run in the second when Kelsey Villasenor walked, Kristin Lopez singled and Caitlin Moerbe delivered an RBI single, but didn’t score again until the seventh when they scored on a passed ball.
Ciera Luna gave up six runs on seven hits and struck out seven while walking four. Two of the walks scored on the grand slam.
Moerbe. Villasenor, Lopez, Destiny Kennedy and Megan Noel had hits for Navarro, but Moerbe had the only RBI in the game for Navarro.
