The Tigers put District 16-4A on notice Tuesday night. Their pitching staff is more than just standout Holden Grounds.
It was freshman right-hander Trevor Nolen putting forth a huge effort against Lindale, throwing five hitless innings before finally allowing a single as the Tigers defeated Lindale 7-2 at Price Field.
Corsicana (18-14-1, 3-0) won for the 16th time in 17 games, keeping its momentum headed into Thursday’s showdown at Whitehouse.
Nolen used his changeup and curve ball to get ahead of hitters, and used another solid defensive effort by the Tigers as he kept putting goose eggs up on the scoreboard.
“He flipped some curve balls in there for strikes and also had a good changeup,” Tigers coach Heath Autrey said. “He was able to locate his fastball on the outside corner. Trevor did a good job.”
Nolen had four ground ball outs in the first two innings. He worked around a walk and hit batter to start the third inning, getting help from a double play to end the inning. Zane Otten caught a line drive in center field and threw home to catcher Zach Rash, who was able to make an adjustment on the throw up the line and tag out Lindale’s Kris Bond for the third out of the inning.
Nolen worked out of trouble in the fourth and fifth innings. He was likely slated to come out of the game in the top of the sixth, but with a no-hitter going, Autrey left him in the game. Lindale’s Ryan Dudley broke up the no-no with a solid single to center to start the inning.
Jeremy Fowler came on and pitched two strong innings to close out the game.
The Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Bobby Lopez walked and Otten had a single. With two outs, Aaron Cantu slapped a line drive back up the middle and a fielding error by Lindale first baseman Sam Sitton allowed two runs to score.
Corsicana broke the game open in the fourth inning. Cantu had a sacrifice bunt to score a run and Brady Harlan had a two-run single to right field.
Layton Wolver added an insurance run in the sixth with a single to right field to score Hunter Denbow.
“We didn’t have too many strikeouts,” Autrey said. “We put the ball in play and ran the bases well.”
