Logan McClinton rushed for 235 yards and a touchdown on only 12 carries, and Trey Henderson scored four touchdowns as the Hubbard Jaguars (1-0) opened the 2013 season with a 58-6 victory of the Rice Bulldogs. Chris Atchley led the Bulldogs (0-1) with 103 yards and Rice’s only touchdown on 22 carries.
Rice took the opening kickoff and picked up two quick first downs, but the drive stalled after a penalty wiped out a big pass play from Dylynn Anderson to Atchley that had the Bulldogs in scoring position.
After forcing a Bulldog punt, Hubbard scored quickly to take an early 6-0 lead. The Jaguars moved 64 yards in only two plays on a drive that took less than 20 seconds. The drive culminated when Henderson scored his first touchdown of the night on a 2-yard plunge. The touchdown was set up by McClinton’s 68-yard run to get the Jaguars inside the 5 yard-line.
Hubbard’s defense took over and gave the Jaguars’ excellent field position to set up the next two scores. Hudson Alderman’s fumble recovery and Braydyn Gillham’s interception would give the Jaguars the ball in Bulldog territory. Both drives ended with touchdowns on short runs by Henderson.
Then, on the first play of the second quarter, Nick Johnson would intercept an Anderson pass and return it 17 yards for a touchdown. Casen Martin added the two-point conversion and the Jaguars increased their lead to 26-0.
Hubbard would add one more score before halftime, as Martin scored on a 17-yard quarterback keeper midway through the second quarter. The big play on the drive was a 51-yard reception by D’Warren Simmons on a pass from Martin.
The Jaguars added two more scores in the third quarter. Hubbard held the ball for more than seven minutes on an 11-play, 62-yard drive that ended with a Martin pass to Simmons on 4th down for a 25-yard touchdown.
Later, Henderson added his fourth score of the night, this time on an 8-yard run to push the Jaguar lead to 50-0.
TheBulldogs responded with their only scoring drive of the night, going 80 yards in eight plays, highlighted by a 28-yard run by Gonzalez and a 30-yard run by Atchley. Atchley finished the drive with a 1-yard run to cut the lead to 50-6. The extra point attempt was blocked by Hubbard’s Felix Washington and the ball bounced off the crossbar.
Hubbard closed out the scoring on a 9-yard run by McClinton and a two-point conversion by Martin late in the fourth quarter.
Hubbard goes back on the road next week as the Jaguars travel to Bosqueville, while the Bulldogs travel to Eustace.
Both games begin at 7:30.
