Kerens wins home opener 54-0 over Dawson

Kerens — KERENS — Kerens  moves to 1-1 on the season after Nate Betts led the Bobcats once again with 133 passing yards and three TD tosses. Betts also rushed for 122 yards on just four carries while scoring once on the ground in a 54-0 win over Dawson.

The Bobcats’ defense was very stingy Friday, allowing just 83 total yards on the night and no points. The defense also had two interceptions, one taken to the promised land by Jeremy Gould from 15 yards out in the first quarter. The Kerens defense was in the Dawson backfield all night long making it tough sledding on Bulldog quarterback, Lane Dotson. In the first half alone, Dawson could only muster one first down. Kerens held Dawson to a total of only four first downs for the night.

After taking the opening kickoff at their own 35-yard line, the Bobcats started rolling and never stopped. Tailback Rayvon Faulk took a Betts' hand-off and scampered 40 yards deep into Bulldog territory. On just the second play from scrimmage, Betts called his own number for a 25-yard TD jaunt to open up the flood gates with 11:08 left in the opening stanza.

After the Jovani Coronado kick that left the score 7-0 in favor of Kerens, Bobcats’ offense scored 27 points in the first quarter. Also scoring in the first quarter for Kerens were Zack Duncan and Brett Anderson.

Duncan scored on a the Bobcats second possession with 8:16 to go in the first after Nate Betts found him wide open in the Bulldog end zone. Anderson then followed suite scoring a nice 12-yard catch and run from Betts that ended all first quarter scoring at the 1:33 mark.

In the second quarter, Betts again called his own number with a 73-yard run, going untouched into the end zone. Less than three minutes later, Tavion Hall got into the scoring act sprinting 60-yards out on the first play from scrimmage with 7:17 and end all scoring in the first half.

Faulk scored with 6:13 left in the contest to close all scoring for the Bobcats with a 15-yard run. Coronado’s extra point was true and the Bobcats finished the contest with the highest point total of the season in the Golden Circle.

A couple of bright spots on the night for Dawson came from Dalton Long, who rushed for 55-yards on 13 tough carries. Jared Gray, Long, and Dotson played well on defense for the Bulldogs as they fall to 0-2 on the year.
