GC Basketball: Weekend Roundup — Frost boys clinch playoff spot, Kerens tops Hubbard, Mildred edges Rice; Frost girls win again and Wortham girls stay alive in playoff hunt.

Corsicana — Frost’s Polar Bears clinched the District 19-1A DII title Friday night with a 71-17 win over Gholson.

The Polar Bears are now 9-2 in the district and 14-7 for the season

Frost was led by Isiah Belcher, who dropped in 15 points, Kobe Hailey, who added 14, and Robert Worley, who finished with 13. Zach Terry (9), Colton Clayton (7), and Ryan Worley (5) also scored for Frost.

 

Boys

Mildred 66, Rice 61


Mildred took a 47-46 lead into the fourth quarter and held on to stay tied for first place in the District 23-2A race at 8-2. Rice, which has lost more close games than any team in the Golden Circle, made it close again. Daniel Arteaga led Rice with 21 points and Colin Haston followed with 13. Sim Nezar score 12 and Ryan Huffman (7), Jamie Metcalfe (6) and Austin Peppers all scored for the Bulldogs.

Mildred was led by Connor Hill’s 19-point night. Russell Holden scored 14 and Draylon Sterling chipped in with 10. Mikey Muncey (8), Jace Butler (7), Jordan Knight (6) and Jordan Harvell (2) also scored for the Eagles, who travel to Blooming Grove on Tuesday for a huge showdown with the Lions, who are 7-2 in the district race.

 

Kerens 65, Hubbard 61

In one of the best games of the night Friday, Kerens, ranked No. 15 in the TABC state poll, hung on to beat Hubbard on the road after the Jags came back from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter to close to within four. Kerens is now 6-1 in the District 18-1A DI race and 16-7 for the season. The Bobcats were led by Nate Betts, who scored 22 points and Brandon Ward, who scored 15. Shelton Sayles (6), Dustin Jock (6), DeQuaylon Bevins (5), Jake Moss (4), Brent Warren (2) and Hunter Green (2) also scored for Kerens.

Hubbard was led by D’Warren Simmons (21), Trey Henderson (14), Jordan Johnson (13) Casen Martin (8), and Braydyn Gillham (4).

Girls

Wortham 60, Dawson 23


Wortham kept its playoff hopes alive and improved to 5-4 in the District 18-1A DI race with the win. Wortham was led by Courtney Chasteen, who dominated he boards and dropped in 21 points, Kamarie Freeman, who scored 16, Sara Sessions (6), Kameron Rhodes (6), Elisha Libhart (4). Hannah McCord (4), Larissa Rivera (2) and Kendle Rhodes (1). The Lady Bulldogs face Cayuga on Tuesday with a playoff berth on the line.

Dawson was led by Jalyn Miller (13), Courtney Warren (5), Sophie Kammerer (3) and Kaylee Martinez (2).
