GC Football: Mildred slams Rio Vista, 61-8

Rio Vista — Will Burnham ran for four touchdowns, three in the second quarter, as Mildred routed Rio Vista, 61-8. Mildred (4-1, 2-0 in District 6-2A DII) erupted for 24 points in the second quarter to take a 40-0 lead at the break.

Mildred’s average starting field position in the first half was the Rio Vista 34, with five of the eight drives starting at the 30 or better. Mildred forced five turnovers and held Rio Vista (1-4, 0-2) to 81 total yards and three first downs. Rio Vista’s touchdown, a 9-yard Dylan Nelson to Gareth Crisp toss, came with the clock running with four and half minutes left after two bad snaps by Mildred’s second-team offense. The losses totaled 28 yards, and set up a 15-yard drive for Rio Vista after a fumble recovery.

Draylon Sterling had 135 yards on 13 carries for Mildred, and had touchdown runs of 7 and 16 yards to run his career total to 89. Mildred’s Devin O’Sullivan connected on field goals of 41 and 17 yards, and his seven extra points gave him 245 for his career, putting him 18 off the all-time career state mark set by Alabama kicker Cade Foster (Southlake Carroll, 263).

    More than 100 of her friends, family members and fans showed up at the Corsicana YMCA on Saturday to celebrate the national title and be on hand for a drawing for an autographed New Orleans Saints football jersey from David Hawthorne, a star defensive lineman for the Saints and Kaylana's uncle
