GC Volleyball Roundup: Rice, Frost win weekend tournaments

Corsicana — Frost won the Dawson tournament over the weekend, and Rice claimed the championship in the Venus tournament. In Palestine, Wortham advanced to the Westwood tournament championship match before falling to the host in three games.

Frost got a bye in the first round thanks to a bye, and then swept Chilton, 25-20, 27-25 to advance to the championship game.

In the championship, the Lady Bears needed three games to down Abbott, 25-17, 17-25, 15-12.

For the tournament, Jae Moore had 15 kills, two blocks, five digs and three aces. Hillaree Schwartz had five kills, three assists, three digs and four aces, and Kaycee Bowling had 16 assists, five digs and seven aces. Heather Montgomery collected five kills and three aces, and Madison Revill had a pair of kills and five digs. Maria Suaste had five digs and Morgan Elmore had two digs and three aces.

Rice won all three matches in Venus to win that tournament. In the opening of bracket play, the Lady Bulldogs beat Keene, 25-16, 25-17. Briana Weaver was 11 of 11 serving with an ace and five kills. Sam Harris was 9 of 10 serving, while Sadie Gent was 11 of 11 serving and 9 or 9 hitting with six kills and six digs. Emily Fletcher was 8 of 8 serving and had seven assists. Kamran McGee was 8 of 8 hitting with three kills.

Rice played Palmer in the second game and won 26-24, 18-25, 25-14. Hanna Owens logged 12 assists, was 9 of 11 serving and had two kills. Harris was 9 of 10 serving, 9 of 12 hitting and had three kills. Lauren Mays was 4 of 4 hitting with two kills. Gent was 12 of 12 serving, and 19 of 20 hitting with seven kills and five digs. Ashton Metcalfe was 5 of 5 serving and had a pair of digs.

Rice is now 4-0.

In the championship game, Rice defeated Venus, 25-17, 19-25, 25-20. Owens was 9 of 10 serving with three aces, two saves and 11 assists. Weaver was 7 of 7 serving with two saves and a pair of digs. Mays was 5 of 5 hitting with six saves and four blocks. Gent was 12 of 13 serving, 19 of 21 hitting and had seven kills, four saves, and 12 digs. Trista McGee was 14 of 14 serving and had eight digs.

The entire team did a fantastic job of working hard and not giving up. They are living up to their motto

Gent was the tournament MVP, and McGee was selected to the all-tournament team.

At the  Westwood tournament, Wortham defeated Oakwood 25-8, 25-12, then topped Crossroads 25-14, 25-18.

In the championship game, Westwood stopped Wortham in three. 19-25, 25-10, 15-1.

Wortham kill leaders included Elisha Libhart and Kierra Busby, while Camey Schaffer and Busby led in blocks. Serve leaders included Ashley Anderson and Kendle Rhodes.

Wortham fell to 7-1 on the season.
