Special to Friday Night Flashback
The Bremond Tigers trailed Hubbard 12-7 after one quarter before stunning the Jaguars with 35 unanswered points to roll to a 49-28 win in an Area Round playoff game played at Waco ISD Stadium on Friday, November 23.
Bremond (9-3) used a balanced offensive attack as the Tigers rushed for 217 yards and four scores while piling up another 144 yards and three more touchdowns through the air as they constantly kept the Jaguars guessing defensively.
Neither offense found much success early in the opening quarter before Hubbard got on the board first when QB Casen Martin scored on a keeper to put the Jags up 6-0 with 2:52 left in the period. Bremond quickly answered with a 7-play, 59-yard drive and took the lead at 7-6 when QB Cade Grych connected with Dawagiek Skaggs from 23 yards out.
Hubbard would take its final lead of the contest on the ensuing kickoff when Casey Jones took a handoff from Logan McClinton and raced 78 yards down the left sideline in front of the Jaguars crowd to score standing up to put his team back out in front 12-7 as the quarter was expiring.
The Tigers regained the lead just before halftime when James Jones caught a 26-yard pass from Grych to give Bremond a 14-12 halftime lead.
Bremond scored once more in the third quarter while shutting down the Hubbard offensive attack to take a 21-12 advantage into the final 12 minutes.
The fourth quarter proved to be the Jags undoing as they simply could not stop the Tigers’ offense as Bremond put three more touchdowns on the board to open up a 42-12 lead before Hubbard finally managed to score twice more in the final period on two touchdown passes from Martin to WR Nick Johnson.
For Hubbard, Martin finished with 162 yards and two scores through the air while Johnson caught five passes for 156 yards and both touchdowns. FB Trey Henderson was the leading rusher for the Jags as he picked up 64 yards on 10 carries while Bradley Walker finished with 52 yards on 18 rushes as the Bremond defense kept last year’s All-State RB bottled up all night.
Bremond moves on now to the Regional Round of the playoffs where they will face Tenaha, a 42-8 winner over Overton while Hubbard finishes the season at 8-3.
