The Tigers cleared the bench in Friday night’s 59-32 victory over West that has Corsicana rolling into the Christmas break.
Tigers coach Don Newton called on his reserves with a big lead and the bench responded with 25 points.
Lathan Carter scored 10 points, all in the paint. Nick Terry had eight points with several nice post moves. And Daniar Martin added seven points, including a stop-and-pop 3-pointer that had the crowd on its feet.
The Tigers take a 13-3 record into the Christmas Holidays and return to action Thursday at the Bayou Classic in Bridge City, Newton’s hometown.
But the focus on Friday was the Tigers’ high energy level after a lethargic effort in a win Tuesday against Whitney.
“We asked them to be engaged and I thought they were,” Newton said.
The Tigers weren’t hot from behind the 3-point arc — they made only three in the game — but they dominated in the pain. Ernest McGhee scored 10 of his game-high 12 points in the first quarter as Corsicana built a 16-6 lead.
The Tigers had six different scorers in the second quarter. Alonzo Gipson, who started at point guard, had his best game, helping Corsicana press the Trojans. Gipson had 11 points.
Corsicana doubled up West at 50-25 on Terry’s putback with 6:07 left in the game. Martin’s 3-pointer and a Carter putback gave Corsicana the final margin of victory of 27 points.
