GC Hoops Roundup: No. 5 Kerens routs Hubbard 82-49 (with complete district standings)

Wortham boys, girls sweep Dawson; BG boys fall to Marlin

HUBBARD — Breanna Wells scored 19 points and Taylor Ames added 18 as No. 5 Kerens rolled to an 82-49 victory in a District 18-1A DI matchup Tuesday night.

Kerens (19-4, 4-0) had four players notch double figures as Cambree Betts had 14 points and Marqueshia Kelly added 11.

Nakaila Banks and Kate Saucke led Hubbard (17-6, 2-2) with 12 points each.

Wortham 53, Dawson 10: Courtney Chasteen scored 14 points as Wortham evened its record in District 18-1A DI with a 53-10 victory over Dawson on Tuesday night.

Wortham (14-14, 2-2) also was led by Kierra Busby with 10 points. Dawson(4-19, 0-4) was led by Jalyn Miller with four points.

Frost 73, Mount Calm 22: Diana Rios scored 15 points to lead No. 9 Frost to a 73-22 win over Mount Calm on Tuesday night.

Frost (21-2, 6-1) had three players reach double figures. Jasmyn Steels and Jae Moore each had 14 points.


Frost 53, Mount Calm 30:
Danial Steels scored 18 points as Frost remained perfect in District 19-1A DII with a 53-30 victory over Mount Calm on Tuesday night.

Frost (5-0) also was paced by Maliko Bruce and Jacob Stroder, who each scored 14 points.

Kerens 77, Hubbard 54: Nate Betts scored 20 points as Tobyus Thomas added 19 as No. 9 Kerens routed Hubbard in an 18-1A DI matchup on Tuesday night.

Kerens (13-5, 2-0) also was led by Daedrion Tolliver, who had 10 points. Hubbard was paced by D’Warren Simmons, who scored a game-high 28 points.  

Marlin 64, Blooming Grove 42: Blooming Grove was blitzed by 23-2A lead Marlin 64-42 on Tuesday night.

Tyler Ellis led Blooming Grove (15-6, 3-2) with 11 points. Daniel Pelzel added 10 points for the Lions, who are in a three-way tie for second place with Mildred and Teague.

District frontrunner Marlin (14-6, 5-0) was led by Mangle Womack, who had a game-high 20 points.

Wortham 56, Dawson 46: Le’Dhareus Freeman scored 16 points as Wortham notched its first district win with a 56-46 victory over Dawson.

Wortham (10-14, 1-1) was also paced by Tyvon Freeman, who had 13 points. Dawson (7-14, 1-1) was led by Caleb Grant, who scored 22 points.

  • GC Baseball: Mildred falls to Riesel, 9-0, on the road

    Mildred managed a hit and struck out 12 times in a 9-0 loss on the road that could have given the Eagles some cushion in the 23-2A standings. They are now 5-6 with a game at league-leading Teague Tuesday.

    That tough and gutsy style of play sent both the boys and girls teams into the playoffs and on Thursday the Tigers were rewarded again for their fine seasons as two boys won special honors,four boys were named to the All-District first team and two girls earned first-team honors.
    Michael Roman, who did a little of everything — and did it well — was named the District 28-4A Utility Player of the Year, and sophomore defender Jesus Barreto was named the district's Newcomer of the Year.

    There's nothing quite like signing day, and Taylor Ames was all smiles and beaming about her future Wednesday when she signed a letter-of-intent, accepting a basketball scholarship to Cloud County Community College in Kansas in front of family, friends and coaches at Kerens, where Ames leaves a legacy like no other.

    Minutes after Navarro split a doubleheader with Paris on Wednesday, Navarro softball Coach Jessica Karenke was told her Bulldogs had just been nationally ranked and are now No. 16 in the NJCAA national softball poll.
    She had no idea.
    And she didn't care.
    Karenke is worried about what happens on the diamond, and she had some concerns after Navarro made four errors in the second game that opened the door for Paris to pull off a 7-2 win after the Bulldogs and Ciara Luna controlled the first game with a 4-1 win.

    Lindale has been poison to Corsicana all year.
    The Eagles won a bizarre game in Lindale to keep the Tigers out of the football playoffs and ruined the boys basketball season with two gut-wrenching wins in the final week of the season.
    They did it again Tuesday, beating the Tigers 4-0 at Price Field to take over second place in the District 16-4A race.
    Lindale (6-2) had one big inning to hand Corsicana (5-3) its second loss in a row.

    She prayed about it. She lost sleep about it. And she prayed about it some more.
    That's just a glimpse of what Marqueshia Kelly went through before deciding to turn down a half dozen basketball scholarships and accept a scholarship to play volleyball at Paris Junior College.
    The journey might have been a little sleepless, but in the end it wasn't that tough for Kelly, who is a multi-sport star at Kerens.
    “I followed my heart,'' she said on Tuesday just moments after signing a letter-of-intent to play volleyball at Paris in front of family, coaches and friends.

  • GC Baseball/Softball: Roundup -- Blooming Grove edges Mildred 1-0 (Adds Dawson-Hubbard baseball)

    Blooming Grove kept its baseball playoff hopes alive, winning a pitcher’s duel, 1-0, in Mildred Tuesday night. Dalton Blake struck out 11 and scattered five hits in a well-pitched game that took an hour and a half to complete.
