CHS Girls Hoops: Lady Tigers fall to John Tyler 51-41 (Updated with standings)

Corsicana — For a brief moment, the Lady Tigers had the look of a team on the verge of pushing its way into third place in District 16-4A.

They were up by four points on John Tyler in the third quarter. Then some of the same old problems crept up on Corsicana.

The Lady Tigers, plagued by turnovers, foul trouble and dominated on the offensive glass, lost their lead and a crucial game to the Lady Lions 51-41 before another solid crowd at Tiger Gym.

Corsicana (15-13, 1-4) plunged into last place in the 16-4A race. John Tyler (17-11, 2-3) pulled into a three-way for third place with Jacksonville and Whitehouse with the second half of district action set to tipoff Tuesday night.

The Lady Tigers have a tough task with a road game at first-place Lindale. They’ll have to rebound better, and their best players have to stay on the floor.

“We have to make shots,” Lady Tigers coach Art Prevost said. “We have to keep the game close.”

Guards Shamara Taylor and Calae Wilson both picked up two quick fouls in the first half. But they managed to play the rest of the half in foul trouble and Corsicana trailed by only 23-21 at the break.

Destini Lunsford scored 9 of her 15 points and helped spur Corsicana from a 17-11 deficit to make it a two-point game at halftime.

The Lady Tigers opened up the second half with a 6-0 run to take a 27-21 lead on baskets by Wilson and Taylor. Lunsford scored with 2:54 left in the third quarter as Corsicana took its final lead at 31-29.

John Tyler went on a 15-1 run as the Lady Tigers had five straight turnovers and a missed layup. And the Lady Lions took advantage, getting to the free throw line 20 times in the second half, making 13 of them to pull away.

“We have to keep the turnovers under 15 or 16,” Prevost said. “I thought our pressure defense, I thought we did a good job.”

Wilson had seven points before fouling out early in the fourth quarter. Taylor added six points.
