CHS Soccer: Lady Tigers soccer takes 2nd place in Athens

Tiger boys come in 3rd at Palestine tourney

The Corsicana soccer teams came home with some hardware from tournament play this weekend.

The Lady Tigers took second place in the Athens Hornet Cup, falling to Mabank 2-1 in the championship game. The Tigers took third place at the Palestine Wildcat Classic, defeating Whitehouse 2-0 to take that trophy.

The Corsicana girls (5-2-1) reeled off three wins and a tie to get into the championship game in Athens. The Lady Tigers beat Athens 4-1, Lufkin Hudson 4-0, Palestine 2-0 and played to a 0-0 draw against Kaufman.

“The girls are playing great soccer and are beginning to show signs of a team that might take it to the next level,” Tigers coach Stan Jones said. "They played two more playoff teams that went three or more rounds deep (in the playoffs). Something special is beginning to come about with those girls.”

The Tiger boys (3-4-1) beat Mexia 1-0, tied Athens 1-1 and lost to Center 1-0 to get into the third-place game against Whitehouse.

“They are showing signs of fight,” said Jones, whose boys’ team is halfway to last year’s six-win season.

Both varsity teams are at home for non-district matches against Kaufman on Tuesday night. The girls play at 5:30 p.m. and the girls at 7 p.m.

Also, the boys junior varsity won the first-place trophy at the Highway 287 Invitational in Ennis.
