The Tigers want to play uptempo basketball and they want to fire up 3-pointers.
That’s Don Newton basketball for you.
They did part of that well in Friday’s home-opening 57-44 victory over Ferris at Tiger Gym.
Corsicana (3-1) made 10 3-pointers, scoring 53 percent of its points from behind the arc. The Tigers made more 3s than free throws — they were a disappointing 7 of 18 from the free throw line.
Tim Lang led the outside attack, scoring all 12 of his points on 3-pointers. Mike Lewis led all scorers with 15, making three 3s. Anthony Jones scored 14 points and made two 3s.
“We’ve been shooting right around 35 percent on 3s,” Newton said. “That’s what we like to do.”
Newton is pushing his team to be more physical and pound the ball inside because of the length of center Ernest McGhee. The Tigers just have to knock down shots when they get close to the basket.
“We couldn’t make anything from 4 or 5 feet,” Newton said.
It kept the Tigers from blowing open the game, that and some costly turnovers. Corsicana had six turnovers in the first two minutes as Ferris crept out to a 6-3 lead with 4:22 in the first quarter.
That’s when the Tigers took advantage of the 3-ball. Jones made one to tie the game and Lewis swished one for a 9-6 lead with 2:01 to go in the first quarter. Lang had scored Corsicana’s first three points from behind the arc.
Lang doubled up Ferris with a 3-pointer 15 seconds into the third quarter, giving the Tigers a 28-14 lead.
Corsicana had a 30-16 lead before Ferris went on a six-point run to get the Tigers’ lead back to single digits, but Lang and Lewis buried back-to-back 3s for a 36-22 lead with 3:13 left in the third quarter.
Even Alonzo Gipson, fresh from the football team, was able to get into the act with a 3-pointer for a 47-31 lead with 5:05 to go in the game.
The Tigers get three days before returning to practice Saturday in preparation for Tuesday’s home game against Forney. The Lady Tigers will also play Forney on the same night.
