Morgan: Soccer finally over for USA
Well, the World Cup is over. OK, it’s still going on, but the US is out of it. We can all go back to ignoring soccer again, and I promise you that’s what will happen. It’s the same thing with tennis. Wimbledon is going on right now, so tennis is getting marginally more attention than it normally gets. Once Wimbledon is finished, tennis will join soccer somewhere on the back page of the sports section alongside rowing.
Mikolas makes debut in Rangers' 6-4 loss
Texas Rangers right-hander Miles Mikolas didn't show any nerves in his major league debut against the Baltimore Orioles. Instead, Mikolas simply focused on keeping the Orioles' powerful lineup off-balance by attacking the strike zone. However, the Rangers' bullpen faltered as Adam Jones and Ryan Flaherty hit solo homers and Baltimore beat Texas for the third consecutive game, 6-4 on Wednesday night.
World Cup: USA battles to the end in 2-1 extra time loss to Belgium
They captured the eyes and hearts of a suddenly awakened soccer nation, who gathered in unprecedented numbers to watch the world's game.
But the end of the ride came at the exact same point as four years ago: with a loss in extra time in the World Cup's round of 16.
Kevin De Bruyne finally beat goalkeeper Tim Howard in the third minute of extra time, Romelu Lukaku scored 12 minutes later to give Belgium a two-goal lead, and the Red Devils hung on for a 2-1 victory Tuesday.

Morgan: Red cards for all
I was going to write a huge column on the World Cup this week. I saw the TV ratings for last weekend and had it figured out. It’s the soccer moms.
Tough sledding: Upcoming GC football schedules offer a lot to ponder
For some Golden Circle football programs, the UIL’s realignment meant a better competition draw, and favorable travel arrangements. For others, far from that. The football schedules, for the most part, are in. And for the most part, the UIL was none too kind to the area.
Navarro set to begin interviewing for baseball coach opening
Interviews begin next week in the effort to replace Whoa Dill as baseball coach at Navarro College. When it comes to JUCO baseball, Corsicana’s a destination spot. “It’s a really desirable job,” Navarro Athletic Director Roark Montgomery said.
US advances to World Cup's 2nd round despite loss
The United States reached the knockout stage of consecutive World Cups for the first time, just not the way the Americans wanted. Germany beat the U.S. 1-0 Thursday in soggy Recife on Thomas Mueller's 55th-minute goal to win Group G, but the Americans held onto second place when Portugal defeated Ghana 2-1 in a game played simultaneously in Brasilia.
Navarro has four teams, four individuals garner NJCAA academic honors
Navarro’s athletic landscape is filled with national and conference titles, and last November, the college’s women’s soccer team played for a national title. Heady for sure, in more ways than one. The soccer team was one of four Navarro College athletic teams honored by the NJCAA for academic achievements last school year.
