Remembering Gwynn: One time in June 1997 ...
My childhood baseball heroes did not play during my childhood, strange as that may sound. ... I have three players I consider my all-time favorites, and one — Nomar Garciaparra — is four years younger than me. Another will be inducted into the Hall of Fame this year. Greg Maddux, 48, is now a Texas Rangers consultant. And then there is the late Tony Gwynn, who passed away last week at 54. His death numbed me.
World Cup: Instead of breather, US contemplates math
Instead of taking a breather, the U.S. created a World Cup math puzzle for its fans back in America. Just 30 seconds from clinching advancement with a game to spare, the U.S. conceded a stoppage-time goal that left it with a 2-2 draw against Portugal on Sunday. With four points, the Americans may need at least a tie from their Group G finale against three-time champion Germany to advance to the knockout stage.

Big strides: Tigers win 2 of 3, barely miss state 7-on-7
Corsicana’s Tigers had their best day on the 7-on-7 football field Saturday at Arlington Bowie High School, where the Tigers defeated Fort Worth Paschal and Arlington Sam Houston and lost a close game to Grand Prairie in the state qualifying tournament.

Do you like high school football and want to make extra money? The Daily Sun may have a gig for you. We’re looking for a handful of people to cover local high school football teams in the fall.
Outdoors: Kevin Reese — Tactical hunting: Sir, Yes Sir!
My pop once told me I might fit into my dress blues if I used bungee cords; the truth hurts. Looking at me it’s hard to believe I spent eight years in the Marines.
In all honestly, I’m not that bad off… I’m just not that well off; I could stand a few months of nonstop treadmill work.
Beyond reminiscing about my life as a Marine and wishing I still looked the part, I miss many aspects of active duty life – chief among them being camaraderie and my trusty M-16 A2 Service Rifle.
CHS Football: Tigers aim high in 7-on-7 football
It's only their second season of summer football, but for the Corsicana Tigers, everything is about the same thing: Improving.
No one knows that better than Tiger quarterback Kishawn Kelly, a fresh face and fresh arm who takes over this fall as a sophomore.
Morgan: You never know who might be offended by a team mascot
The U.S. Patent office has voided the Washington Redskins’ trademark on the name Redskins.
Obviously, Congress is an outdated, useless institution since they seem to be bypassed every other day.
The patent office tried this in 1999, but the Washington entry in the NFL sued in federal court and won. They expect to do so again.
However, if the patent office action is upheld, then all sorts of team mascots could be in danger. Lots of them could be offensive to someone.
GC Baseball: Kerens' Anderson, Warren named to THSBCA 1A All-State team
Kerens' senior pitcher and outfielder Brett Anderson was named to the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association's Class-1A All-State baseball team, and Kerens' outfielder Brent Warren made the third team.
Green Machine: Kerens’ Betts, Baxter prove to be extraordinary
They share so much — desire and drive and the love of sports, green and white jerseys, a passion to succeed, pride in their school, their town and the teams they play for — even their numbers, 23 and 24, run in sequence for Kerens' Nate Betts and Breanna Baxter, who have known each other their entire lives. And now they share this: Betts and Baxter are the Community National Bank and Trust All-Golden Circle Athletes of the Year.
