Local residents flocked to grocery stores in preparation of a long, cold night Wednesday. Brookshire’s, located off Main Street was no exception.

With sales steady all day, Assistant Store Manager Steve Putman and the rest of the employees busily stocked and checked out customers at a furious pace.

“We have sold a lot of ingredients for stew and chili,” Putman said. “That has been our most purchased items.”

From 4 to 6 p.m. is traditionally the busiest time of the day for the grocery store. With schools out early for the day and some businesses closing in preparation for the sleet and freezing rain, rush hour became gridlock at the checkout counter.

Despite the large number of customers, Putman said there was no shortage of food or water and emphasized the abundance of stock.

“We have had no problems with a shortage and the only snag we have run into has been a bird that won’t leave,” he said.

Brookshire’s stayed open until 10 p.m. and shoppers came in numbers until closing Wednesday night.
